Hello all,
Been reading through the el-cheapo build threads while waiting for my membership to clear. Makes my work look terrible.
To clarify that, I've attempted some kitbashing in the past - long before I had the skills or proper patience to pull them off - this was about 10-15 years ago. Examples of such include the following:
Widebody Athearn SDP40 masquerading as a GP40TC - sold this just yesterday:
Disaster-zone IHP F40PHL-2 (resin) - not pretty at all. Thick paint, and subject to a decal disaster early on. Re-striped it as a 10 footer just for looks recently; the replacement decal should be quite obvious.
Just in case you've lost all hope in my work by now, following are a pair of simple repaint and weathering jobs I did on a pair of ancient, swap-meet Athearn U-boats:
And, more recently, a simple chassis paint refresh and plow detailing (not shown or done in this photo yet) of an R-T-R Walthers Tri-Rail F40PH, for once representing the prototype correctly with a black chassis - not the silver incorrectly supplied from the box:

As you can see, given a proper DSLR, I'm a better photographer than kitbasher.
Nevertheless, this has not stopped me from getting the fool idea that I can pull this off once more - and model an F40PH-2C (as in my avatar) out of two Walthers F40PH shells.

That's why I'm here - to ask your advice - on the best way to cut the shell, glue revised hood details onto it, and - if you fellows tell me I can get away with it - paint it with Scalecoat II through a Preval sprayer.
Mind you, given that I am not that skilled, I'm going to aim for a quality build, but by no means detailed much at all. If it looks like an RTR loco, I'll be happy.
In the meantime, I've already ordered a used Atlas B40-8 chassis and Blomberg M trucks. I can't seem to find a single Walthers shell for sale, much less two.
