Found out yesterday that the FWWR purchased 3 SD-40M-s from CEFX. These are inbound from Chicago so I have not seen these, but have been told they are rebuilt from SD45 power. I would like to build a couple in the future. Are there any things I need to look for that are unique to these? I have a spare Kato SD45 on shelf, is this a good start?

If you want accurate models you will need to find out what the CEFX numbers were. Most of the SD45 cores were ex ATSF and SP but from many different orders and details.

I have a Kato SD45 sitting on the bench right now. Looking at these shots of a unit built off an SD45, I can't see any visible difference: www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=2770023But, like the poster above, you would need to get the actual number of the unit or somehow obtain the serial number and check the photo archives to tell for sure. I'm learning that these rebuilds can be very different, one unit compared to the next, as it depends on what was used as the basis of the rebuild. There is a current thread here for a GP38-3, with the poster creating three in series. The details for each are very different, as different units were used as starting points. good luck with the build - keep us posted! -bill

Thanks, Guys. Hope to get to the yard this weekend and see if they have showed up.
I had never heard of a SD-40M-2 designation before, so was trying to figure out what changes were made. From what Ive found out, it is rebuilt from a SD45. Some people have said that they replace the 3600hp, 20 cylinder engine with a 3000hp, 16 cylinder engine. So would the side doors be different?
Another spotting feature is the addition of a -2 Electrical Cabinet Filter Box.
How about the trucks?
As people have said each one is unique, but just trying to figure out what to look for.

the M i believe means for "modified". which is what i've seen when sd45's get remotored with 16cyl engines.

Nope, When I went down there two week ago, per an employee they had not arrived, but were hoping to be here some time last week. Some of the people that I know have not said anything yet so I am assuming none of the units have started arriving yet. I am hoping to make it down there in the next few weeks.

Judging from the pics, these units started out as SD40's and were modified to dash 2M specs. Am I correct? Using the info from the archives, FWWR 2023 can be traced back to SP 7369, which was built in '66 to plain SD40 specs...

From the links given, while FWWR 2023 started out as an SD40, FWWR 2024 was built as an SP SD45 and still keeps the flared radiator.

Hi Wayne, looking at the photos to do the FWWR 2024 from the Kato SD45 you have. You will need to add a set of High Tech Details HTD-6030 S.P. G.R.I.P. Battery Box Door Set Various units, along with Cannon & Co. 1203 SP Split Equipment Doors. You will also need a dash 2 electrical cabinet, mesh tool basket for at the end of the blower duct from Plano or Details West & a Details West #366 Rear Light Cluster -- SP Diesels Flat Back. If you look at the link to my post from my SD40E build you can see all of these parts except for the tool basket. dieseldetailer.proboards.com/thread/12571/sp-sd40eIf you have any other question just ask. Yes a site I belong to has started to show up with photos for the 3 new units. Started collecting detail parts to pursue this build. Had planned to go down last Friday and take pics but with Birthday not able to, family surprised me by flying into town to help celebrate it. Damn I'm old now, made it to the half century club, not sure if that good or bad. So i will try to make trip this weekend.

Was able to go down to Hodge Yard this past weekend and photograph two of the new engines. FWWR 2024: FWWR 2025: On 2025 there is a filter located on the rear of the air tank, anybody got an idea what this is and a detail source?

Details West has one of those in their product line, AF226 is the number.

Those dry the air so no condensation/humidity get inside the air system. If you look closely at the last pic you posted you will notice the petcock on the bottom of the largest cylinder-shaped part in the center, which is used for draining the dryer. As some additional background, Tony Sisson has some great photos on his website - this is a photo of the older style units from an SD40-2 tonysissons.zenfolio.com/p471553095/h2191e1d7#h2191e1d7Just in case you look to model something older... -bill
