Guys, here is a shot of my latest creation. This model began as an undec. Atlas RS-3 and was built using detail parts from DW, DA and a few custom built parts. The model was painted with Scalecoat II paint, decaled with Microscale decals and weathered with Floquil colors.

HI Bob,
Excellent job on the RS3. It was nice to meet you at the Marion RPM, it is always good to be able to put a face with a name.

Bob, another fine model sir. I have a question for you regarding the paint you use. I know you said Scalecoat II is what you used but my question is, is this a straight black or is it mixed with something else?
I heard that an all black engine does not look right if painted straight black. Just looking for your opinion since i know you have built many black engines.
Once again this is a mighty fine looking engine.

Erik Erik, what you say about meeting folks face to face is so true. I enjoy meeting guys that I've e-mailed time and time again and get to talk with them and discuss our favorite hobby. It was so good to finally meet you and I hope to be able to do it again soon. Maybe St. Louis??

Anthony, color is a subject I shy away from when talking about models since so many modelers tend to have so many different views of what a certain color is. However, since you asked, this model was shot with Scalecoat II Loco Black, straight out of the bottle thinned about 30% and I start with the same color on every black model I paint. Some guys prefer to lighten their blacks with lighter colors before painting, but I prefer to do my color lighting AFTER painting or during the weathering process. I guess you could say you need to do whatever suits you best. I am a huge believer in SP Light Lark Gray and Roof Brown, but have been known to over spray my weathering boo-boos with very thin Floquil Black or very thin Weathered Black. I try to convince young or inexperienced modelers to weather in very thin layers so as not to overdo it. It's much easier to add weathering than it is to remove or to correct it.

Sainted Excrement, Bob, THAT is Excellent!! Robert, I know what you're saying, I've just never heard it put that way!! Thanks for the kind words concerning my two week wonder. I was asked to present a clinic in Marion last weekend and I didn't have anything new so I lit out like I was on fire to get the little RS built and I finished it on Sunday afternoon just before I was to leave for Marion on Monday. The Atlas RS-3 has received it's share of bad publicity as far as being prototypically correct, but if built correctly, detailed well and convincingly weathered, it looks as good to me as any RS-3 we have on the market today...........plus it helps to have several on hand.

Bob,
Very impressive for a two week build. I do have STL pencilled in, of everything works out right with work. Me and my brother Kristopher will be there as well.

Very nice. What did you use for the handrails & stanchions? The stanchions are made by Smokey Valley and the handrails are made from .012 brass wire.

What are the knucklebusters made from? Would love to find some so I don't have to bend piano wire anymore. Excellent weathering

HI Taylor,
I asked Bob the same thing, he said the were Inter Mountain F unit door handles that some one gave to him. I wish someone made these as a separate detail part.

That's a fine looking Southern Alco. It looks like it would in its twilight.
