i obtained a damaged athearn MOPAC SD40-2 at a way low price its numbering had been damaged along with other paint touch ups that didn't match so decided to do the decent thing and use it for a rust painting excercise i personaly view weathering as 99.9% observation and .1 % work i view weathering as not only obtaining colours in correct areas but also observing finnishes ie glossy , matt , silk , not only that but also surface texture so this excercise i wished to depict rust ( but first job at least lets get the chassis , bogies and tanks in MOPAC blue !! ) my main materials were ( carrs weathering powders " a UK product ( humbrol do the same thing or use ground up artists pastels ) matt humbrol varnish , citadel acrylic washes , and airbrushed weathering my idea was to apply the powders using matt varnish to give the textures for the course rust and used citadel washes for rust stained areas no detailing as yet just paint and as i said the project started to disguise damaged numbering

You've done a very nice job, rust areas look good to the eye. How'd you do that?

as it says in the write up john , i used weathering powders in rust colours mixed with matt varnish for the textured rust and i used a citadel acrylic wash for the rust staining

De rust features are very, very good! I'll have to try that on one of mine. I do like the way the weathering powders work too. I use Bragdon.

I like that a lot, mixing with powders really gives it that extra dimension, plus nothing better than bringing a cheap model back to life.
We had loads of rusty coal wagons to do and because they needed a respray I gave that salt technique a go and that came out pretty good too, although not tried it on a locomotive yet.
My mate uses Humbrol's maskol (liquid masking tape) puts a rust patch on, repaints over the top in the same colour and then peels it off after it's all dry but it doesn't give that lumpy texture that your technique does Tornado,
Great stuff,
Oly

cheers oly !! not had much time to visit recently due to restoring a motorcycle , ( how ironic one hobby involves getting rid of rust and another involves adding it !! ) busy at work , I also have been busy with a large hallway mural painting , and taking my motorcycle test ( all 4 parts ) but as winter approaches I should be here more !!
