After reading many of the PFL posts and looking over the CIOR web site, the PFL bug has bit me good. I have settled on my western road of COPPER STATE RAILWAY.
For RPM I will stick to my 1977 time frame and model CONRAIL, but for modern I will focus on my road. I do in a way like modern railroading, but I do not care much for any of the prototype roads so this works great for me.
I did some research today on my line and its points of operation and it works out perfect for what I want. Not to small to not warrent big power, but not to big to have to load up on power.
It will be a railroad in dvelopemment for a while, but in a nut shell it follows what I put up on another thread the other day. Back when the UP took over the SP, they wanted to discontinue the Phoenix operations. Basically bypass Phoenix. The COPPER STATE RAILWAY was established and purchased all the Phoenix area operations from UP. The line runs north from an interchange with UP at Gila Bend into Phoenix from the west. Through Phoenix where ther are two classification yards. and smaller in west Phoenix and a larger one with an autorack facility in downtown Phoenix. The line then goes east through Tempe, Mesa and Chandler to head southeast out of the metroploitan area and hooks up again with the UP again just south of the town of Eloy. On the east side there is also an interchange north of the town of Cooligde with the MAGMA Railraod and the COPPER BASIN RAILROAD.
I have to worj out a map and get a web page started on this. It will be a work in progress for a while since I know practicaly nothing about railroading. I will learn though and hopefully my web page will grow to something worth reading.
I already have two Kato SD40-2's I will turn into my first CSRY SD38-2 units.
Thanks all for the inspriation.
Brian

Sounds good so far, there are a bunch of us who are either former railroaders or still working for a railroad so if you need any help with stuff like that just ask.One of us can help with that.. I am not sure if I missed it but do you have a paint scheme as of yet?

Yup, like Anthony said, there are several current and former railroaders on here. I worked for NS here in Indiana.
Questions, shoot away. Its a fun hobby the whole ProtoFreelance gives you, plus if you like air conditioners on your engines, you put them on, if you like ditch lights of a certain style, use them, the list goes on and on. The only thing I might add, make sure you stick to a theme, using a certain type engine, or certain type air conditioner, MU stand, whatever the case is. Reality lays at the feet of being able to convince others your railroad is real.
With your modeling skill, that won't be to rough!

Paint scheme, did someone say Paint scheme???
In my little brain, I see Silver and Orange, but not exactly like the WP. I wouldn't do a copper color, just don't know about that. PROVE ME WRONG, I like seeing that stuff.... Come on guys, lets see some Copper Range paint.

Thanks all for the encouragement and the offer of any help I need understanding railroad operations.
The paint scheme has not been decided on yet. I like the gray and copper look, but Copper Basin already has that scheme and I do not want to be a look-a-like. So the paint is still in the decision stage.
The units will have airconditioners, but they will be the type that are under the cab floor and not visible. I remember when I lived in AZ and visited the Arizona & California Railroad. The chief mechanic at the time wanted to put these under the floor air conditioners in, but they were to expensive and when he asked Rail America if they could do this, they were told that under no circumstances were any Rail America company locomotives to have air conditioners. He let the subject drop because they had roof mounted air conditioners.
The reason for the under the floor air conditioners on my units is because I am taking a page out of the Australian railroading and putting a double roof to help block the heat transfer from the cab roof into the cab. Living in AZ, I know how hot it gets in the summer and how hot metal baking in in the sun can get.
SD38-2 (Rebuilt from SD40-2): This being modern railroading, ditch lights are manditory. Kato sets them up nice on their mid production SD40-2's. I'll simply replace the light bar with bulbs. I will definitely have to use spark arrestors due to the dry climate. The horn will be moved to the left side behind the first radiator fan. Debris kicker plows will be applied to both ends. The exhaust hatch will be cut out and an angled PAF box inserted. The lead radiator fan will be blanked out and a cover welded over the screens under that fan. This is how the A&C did their rebuilt GP40's to GP38-2's. As I mentioned earlier, a false cab roof will be added.
One of these units will be an ex CONRAIL SD40-2 so it will have the flexicoil trucks. All the others will be ex BN units.
GP38-2 (Rebuilt GP35): These will be from the various phases of GP35's. the DB hatch is cutout and moved back to allow the installation of an angled PAF box. Similar to how the Utah Railway units are done. False cab roof will be added to reduce heat transfer into the cab. Horns are moved to the radiator hatch as on the SD38-2. Middle 36" radiator fan removed and hatch blanked out. Ditch lights added.

I like the paint scheme of yellow & blue. It would be nice and bright to reflect the western sun and easy to see in the desert. How about something like this?

Ok Brian I am going to throw a paint scheme out there,a good friend of mine by the name of Hank Stephens who does awesome paint schemes and radical drawings of rebuild engines and who is a member here also drew these and I when I saw it I thought of the CSR ....... it reminds me of the southwest area you are modeling. Now I have changed it a little from the original so it does not match exactly but you decide....... as you can see there are some slight differences...

The last one reminds me of the power on the Farmrail/Grainbelt at Clinton, OK. All it needs is the name of an American Indian tribe!
