I noticed something last week when I was stripping a cab to use on a GP38 project and then again this week on a different engine - Atlas uses bright silver as a primer on a lot of engines painted from the factory. The cab I was stripping was factory painted in the usual UP theme. The other engine was painted in Reading Pullman Green. I'm going to try the silver primer on a GP7 I will be painting in the Reading yellow/green theme. There must be some reasoning behind it. I've never thought to use silver to enhance the color of lighter/yellow paint.
I wanted to pass this along and also find out if anyone else has had better coverage/enhanced results from a silver primer.

Hi Bill,
I use a white primer on almost all of my models. I find it makes the colors more vibrant and it takes less paint to cover the lighter color.

Interesting Vince. It does make sense. I believe the UP shell I was stripping had the silver on both sides though....

Hi Bob,
It may have silver on both sides. The couple of times I've used silver as a primer it didn't end pretty. I had a hard time keeping the final colors from wanting to peel off. I guess the colors wouldn't penetrate the surface of the silver and stick as they nornally would with white. I use Scalecoat II and SC II thinner. To me, using the silver should work well. It covers quickly and needs only a thin coat. I haven't had much luck though.
Cheers, Mike

I found that P2K locos are silver on the inside of the body shells............my GP30`s were like that before they were repainted to look like they do now.......however I did repaint the insides black to prevent any light from leaking out.

I just gave the silver undercoat a try - bad idea. Silver seems to be slippery and doesn't offer the good bite/adhesion needed. This was probably made worse by the fact that the silver I used was enamel and used acrylic on top. I tried to mask with blue tape and pulled the finish off. Epic fail...
