Hello gang I have an original mrc prodigy dcc system the one with the addresses on the dial. So I'm pretty sure it's not upgradable so I was looking at a new one. Now I've been really happy with the mrc system so I was looking at the mrc prodigy express system I have a small layout and its just me so I don't need anything crazy I just want the 4 digit programming and I'm starting to look at sound decoders and I don't think my old system will support them. So any input or comments or experience would be great
Thanks

Hi Kevin,
It sounds like you have thought this out, so I would say you are ahead of the curve. One of the major things I found when I worked at the hobby shop. Was most people bought just by the brand name and never considered what they were looking to get out of the system.
I myself run a Digitrax Super Cheif with duplex and simplex throttles. The duplex and simplex this reefers to the different type of radio throttles that Digitrax offers. I do this for two reasons, 1st this way I can take my own throttle to a friends house and operate there or they can bring theirs to my place and operate. 2nd is I got a great deal and upgraded. From reading your post I don't think this will affect you, but I wanted to explain it so you were not confused.
I would say if you are happy with the MRC, upgrade to the express. You know the system for the most part. So the learning curve should be minimal to nil.
One of the other things to consider is, if you have friends who run DCC you might want to consider. Upgrading to the same system they are running. That way if you run into issues you have someone to lean on for advice.
In my opinion both MRC, NCE, and Digitrax make great systems. They both have there pluses and minuses. Even though I have a Digitrax system there are some things I think NCE dose better. I like the feel and easy of use of the NCE better, I wish that I could use a NCE controller with a Digitrax system. Then again I think Digitrax dose consisting better.
In the end it comes down to what system you like and feels best to you. I am sure you will get a ton different opinions about what is best, but they are just opinions. We all have one wrong or right.
If at all possible try to get a chance to operate all the systems you are considering. Then make a list of the likes and dislikes, then make your choice from there. You won't be disappointed.
It's a lot like buying a computer everyone makes them. They all have the same components. It's just which one dose what you want it to the best.
If you have any other question just ask.
Erik

Spud, I have the system you are looking at.
It is great for a small one-man layout. I run several locos and even consists on the "layout" I have in my 10'x11' room. The full-size, hand held throttle really makes function use much easier than the smaller compact ones of other makers, and has the majority of the functionality of the larger ones. Programming and consisting are simple to do. The instructions are on the back of the controller. Price-wise, it was lower at the time than any of the other comparable systems.
I have experienced a few drawbacks though. There is no DC power hookup for accessories like on most power packs. You will need an extra power supply for any layout lights, or convert them to run on DCC power. Also, the cord connecting the throttle to the base unit is rather short at about 3 feet. I have to put the controller down when I go across the room to a switch or derailed car (first world problems, right?). They may sell a longer cord, but I am not sure.
If you have any specific questions about the system, I will be happy to answer them.

Actually this topic has been covered on the yahoo group. You can actually use a standard cat 5 cable of any length for this. Also, you can use standard cat5 outlets and daisy chain them so you can use multiple outlets at the same time. I use the advance2 and have done this on my current layout and will add about 5 more on my next layout.

Thanks guys for the help so the express isn't like the advanced where you have 4 cat 5 jacks on the front? If not I may have to re wire my layout jacks

I started with the Command 2000 and like Eric said I stuck with the name, I then upgraded to the Prodigy Advanced 2 and I could not be happier. Digitrax makes a great system and while I was in Chicago for the last 4 years (my jobs in Michigan now t hank god!)I got to use one on a regular basis but it seemed a little more involved to use. But to each his/her own all systems have their merits and drawbacks. If I was to buy a new system again I still would buy the MRC.

Kevin; Another happy MRC Advanced 2 owner here. I'll be buying another handset for my kids to use in the near future. No interest in upgrading to wireless right now.
Love the feel and ease of use of the throttle. My 8 year old just loves using the throttle. He spurred me on to complete my current layout build when the first time he used it he said "Dad can we do some more switching when the layout is done?"
How could I say no to him when he put it like this?

TB and Spud, thank you for letting me know that! I really could use a longer one. And Spud there is only the one Cat 5 jack for the throttle and another for the booster bus on the Express. I do not believe it is expandable, but then again I have never tried. Others may know more about that.

No prob James. Well guys thanks for all the advice I think I'm gonna hold off for now and keep using the old system and save a few more cents and save up for the advance 2 its well worth it I think. Maybe by then ill have some sound traxx decoders.
