I bought this Athearn RTR NS C40-9W at an auction last year for around $35. Someone had already gone through an done a significant amount of detailing work, including working ditch lights, MU hoses, separate wire grabs, traction motor cables, horn, antennas.... the list is pretty extensive. So far I've worked at installing a decoder (motor wired and operable, lighting not yet complete). The previous owner did not light the rear headlights, and I don't intend to either since I will never operate this engine long hood forward. I plan to install some MV lenses instead. I've removed the exhaust stack, as the standard Athearn part is far too big. I have a few parts that need to be re-installed, such as one of the side air flasks and the rear trainline hose. I also plan at relocating the headlights from the nose to the cab roof, per the prototype photos. After all the detailing is complete, a bit of light weathering and it will be ready for runthrough service on my EAY. Note I am not much of a NS modeler, so please point out anything else that I should correct. Here's some pictures.

Don't worry about nitpicking, since I really haven't actually done much of anything yet. Rear ditchlights will be installed as well. Thanks!!!

Will the headlight be relocated? I plan to. I think it would be a shame not to with all the other detailing done to it.

Hey everyone, I've gotten a bit of work done to this locomotive over the past week. I started with wiring the motor to a decoder, all that is left now on that end is wiring in the lights. I've also relocated the front headlight from the nose to the top of the cab. It looks much better. I also made a few tweaks here and there, correcting the exhaust stack issue, and touching up some paint where it had been chipped off. I will try to post some more photos soon. Besides wiring in the lights, this unit is basically ready for weathering, except.... I've been looking at some detail shots of the rear of the unit, and have noticed that the rear anticlimber is completely wrong. The link below is a great example. www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1388967The athearn model anticlimber matches the anticlimber of NS 8446, which is coupled to the 9251 in the photo above. I'm not thrilled that the anticlimber is incorrect, but at the same time I don't particularly want to open a can of worms either. Thoughts??
