Hi, I'm new here, and I'm trying to detail an NW SD45. I would like to know what kind of horns these had on the NW, as well as if they had any kind of safety lights such as ditch, beacon, or mars lights. I'm modelling a kind of freelance where NW and Southern have partnered rather than fully merged to form NS. THANKS!

The N&W's universal horn was the Leslie RS-5T-F, details west # 191. They didn't recieve any extra lights, but I will be sticking ditch lights on my Fantasy NS unit for 1996. I think that should help. Christian

If you check out some photos on line, you'll see the first order of N&W SD-45s had front hand brakes and low mount trucks, while the newer units had a rear brake wheel and high mount truck brakes.

I've looked at NW black and white till my eyes hurt.. I know they're fairly spartan as far as details.. Which is leading me to ask...would ditch lights or a roof beacon be too horribly out of place on them? It's just tough because the NS was formed before alot of said safety steps were required, so the NW and Southern freights seemed to not really have any of them at all..

I think it would be out of place big time.

Of course, you could act like the merger never took place and bring it up to today's standards (ditch lights, reflective tape, etc.).....use a little artistic license, but keep it prototypical. Then, show us your work!

Then, show us your work! Well, I was thinking that I would do it like the 2 did a partnership instead of a full blown merger, that way repaints weren't necessary, but a few NS engines might be spotted along the way. And of course I'll share once I'm done

Back in the 1960s, the Nickel Plate almost merged with the Chesapeake & Ohio. I've always wondered if fate had taken a different turn we might have seen Chessie System or CSX locomotives with NKP under the numbers like Western Maryland and B&O units had. Your idea is pretty good. There was a paint scheme in the early 1980s where all the N&W units had a white skunk stripe. That would have been kind of cool had Southern and N&W kept that scheme but kept either the Southern lettering or Norfolk & Western lettering on a Skunk Stripe scheme.

I'd have to agree, that looks really interesting... also, does anyone know a manufacturer of N&W high hood diesels in G scale now? Aristo hasn't produced them in a few years to my knowledge..

I think it was just a handfull of GP38ACs, 4104, 4107, and 4129 painted prior to the merger in 1981. Richard Shell of Shellscale Decals has this scheme in one of his sets and he sells direct from his website and accepts Paypal.
