I am currently rebuilding two Proto 2000 SD50 locomotives into Norfolk Southern SD40E numbers 6328 and 6329. Both are equipped with Flexicoil trucks, however, the sideframes included with the SD50s are the incorrect style. I couldnt find anything on Smokey Valley's site, so I was curious if anyone knows of any manufacurer who makes the flexicoil sideframes that would fit a Proto 2000 truck. Thanks!

You'll have to live with the incorrect axle spacing. Good stand in.

I have a Proto2000 SD50 taken apart right now on my workbench. The mountings for the trucks are like no others I have seen, which is typical for most Proto2000 units!! The trucks appear to be some type of Kato or Atlas clone, but mount totally differently then Kato or Atlas trucks. Athearn trucks won't fit either.....I tried Athearn and Kato with HT-C's. The Athearn Genesis Flexicoils will not fit either. What ever you decide to do to get the Flexicoil on your SD50 your gonna have to devise your own mounting for them and do some cutting/milling on the frame to get them to fit. Also remember the P2K side frames are about 20% too small, so modifying them will just give you an inaccurate, too small side frame.
Ideally, get an Athearn RTR SD50 with Flexicoil trucks.......problem solved......it all depends on how much you want or have to invest.

Simply modifying the sideframes is only a semi-fix. the flexicoils had equally spaced axles, the HTCs have centre axle closer to one axle than the other. Not by much, but you'd notice it if you put flexi frames on an HTC gearcase. I did this to my SDP45 because I used a SD40T-2 frame and did the sideframe swap but noticed the centre axle wasn't lined up, so I had to move it...PITA
