So, if a fella was crazy enough and was able to get the Kaslo shells, which shell (HR412 or M420) more closely represents the door arrangement of an HR616. I've been thinking of getting a couple of the Kaslo shells (two to get enough doors and a spare cab if needed) and Stewart 630 drive for the Dofasco trucks. Any pics on the net of the Kaslo shells and the 1:1 HR616, it is hard to determine the door layout.

Hey Rick, I've been wanting to do the same..I even had a similar post to this on here somewhere.
I went as far as emailing John at Kaslo and asking him if I could order some parts. He said he could send me a damaged shell (for the cab) as well as the steps, anticlimbers, etc, for next to nothing. It turns out that he's working on an HR-616 and he expects to release it this year or early the next.

Rechecked the email and he said "As for the HR616 it will be out after the Dash 8-40-CM so hopefully by late Spring...." meaning spring 2013.

Picking up a brass HR616 is hard as they are so rare. I see the 8-40CMs come up quite a bit and a friend has one that I will be buying once I sell the required limbs for $800 factory painted and DCC already installed. I have only seen one come up on Evilbay once in the last three years and a couple Kaslo shells are more in my price range although you did score a smoking good deal at $500. That isn't one I would pass up if I could scrounge the cash. Scratching the roof and long hood end is a lot less work than the sides. Steps and pilots would pretty much be the same and no walkway is needed. Then there is that pride factor
Not a big fan of HOYardsale after I was accused of lying by the list owner and the insane photo linking rules that were in place at the time. That did it for me. And as much as I would love to be on the list, I won't .

I'm pretty sure I am banned for life there as I let my opinions on his attitude and rules be known in no uncertain terms when he rejected a list that I had uploaded all the photos to PBase and linked the photos in the email and he rejected it saying I HAD to host the pictures on the yahoo group. Well as many of you know doing that a few hundred times on the Yahoogroup would drive anyone batty. I had done a couple other different batches in the weeks before and they had been allowed and then this one rejected

Hi all. Now there's a prototype diesel i'd like to see available in "HO" scale. I've been looking up photos of the CP Rail version & thinking how to build 1; either kitbash or scratchbuilt. Thankyou. hanny. Australia

CP - GMDD SD40-2F CN - BBD HR616 CN - EMD SD50F CN - EMD SD60F CN/BC Rail - GE Dash 8 C40-M
CP's Draper Taper was really an SD50 to be honest. As was said, Kaslo has the SD40-AF, which is on my bucket list. As for the others...they're in the "works"

I have a HR616 shell. It was resin cast by a company called Nova Tech from Ontario. The casting is crude, but it is about 20 years old.
NT was apparently a computer firm but did thhe model. I have looked them up, but can't find them.

I have one of those sheels also. Crude is a bit of an understatement....

I believe Fletchco, Associated Model Makers, Prototype Model Industries (the original, not the current PMI), and NAFTA trains were all the same company, or were different names for the same company over time. NovaTech was probably another, I've seen old magazine ads from them for a large-scale RS18 and the HO Turbo I believe. Known for producing somewhat crude resin Canadian model shells which many compare to soap carvings, of the top of my head they did the TurboTrain, RS23, S13, SD40-2F, LRC, HR616, and GMD1 and probably a few others in HO - I've seen or at least heard of people doing stuff with the shells above. All the S13/RS23 and GMD1 shells I've seen look quite crude, and from others opinions the rest are about on-par. I also recall hearing they had some vaporware issues and quite a few unhappy customers, maybe that's why the name changes/new companies. Check out the old PMI's site, if you go under NAFTA and click Locomotives, you can view some shots of their SD50F and LRC shells here: liveweb.archive.org/web/20030519180638/http://www.prototypemodels.ca/ho_locomotives.htmEDIT: Dug out an old MR from 1997 I was reading recently, I remembered seeing one of their ads in it:

They were Ambitious, I will give them that. They may have been crude by today's standards, but back then when they were the only game in town for someone incapable of scratch building I guess they would probably pass muster.

Ambitious yes, and pretty bad even for the time. Kaslo was already producing their kits (flat cast back then) along with a few custom casters with quality that was far ahead of Novatech. Novatech and the group of companies that MrDan refers do succeeded in doing was to drive many modellers away from all resin kits and it took a few years for the likes of Kaslo, RYM, WrightTRAK and others to be considered viable options for many modellers.
As for HR616s in resin, others have already stated that Kaslo intends to do them, but it will be 2014 at the earliest before we see them. I have my brass one so I'm in no hurry to get another soon, but I hope that they do a good job (don't copy the nose length error from the M420W). The HR616 shares the same wheelbase as the C630M/M630/M636 so the Bowser drive will be perfect.

If you don't want to kitbash, you could go to Shapeways and get the shell 3D printed.

According to John at Kaslo, their HR616 shell will be out next year (2014). The C40-8M's will be coming out first, estimated sometime this fall.
If one can wait...

I will be waiting for both the Dash 8-40CM and the HR616 shells from Kaslo. Was in the process of kitbashing a CM out of an Atlas C40-8 but stopped when I heard about the Kaslo shells and the Bowser trucks.
