My New York Albany and Susquehanna finally has its first locomotive. This is the first of 25 SD40-3's on the roster. Other than a Salem air filter which I am waiting for and some piping on the air tanks it is done. This is the most complicated build I have ever done and it was a huge learning experience as I had never worked with Cannon & Co. parts before. I want to thank all the guys out there that answered my questions and helped build my knowledge so I could complete it. Some things on it such as my decaling wasn't up to par with my normal but it all came together and I really enjoy the results. A special thanks to Jim from Highball Graphics for making the decals. Have a great day. Sorry about the pictures. Photography is one thing I'm still working on. Shane

Nice!! I like the scheme, what paint colors were used? Do you have stripes on the rear like you do on the nose?

Thank you for the kind words guys. I used CSX new image blue and Erie Lakawanna yellow to match the colors of the New York State flag. The rear has stripes like the front as well.

Hi guys, thanks again for the comments.
A brief history of how my railroad came to fruition:
In the late 1990's Canadian Pacific had made many attempts to divest itself of the former D&H lines. In 1999 New York State along with several regional economic development authorities bought the former D&H from Canadian Pacific. Operating under the administration of the NYSDOT the New York Albany & Susquehanna operated a rag tag group of lease locomotives. In 2002 NYS had managed the company to a very successful organization similar to how the formation Conrail became successful. It was decided at this point to put the company up for public ownership. At this point it began trading on the NYSE. The railroad then with strong financial backing began a large refurbishment of the physical plant.
Twenty five SD40-2's were rebuilt by National Railway Equipment into SD40-3's. Fifteen GP38-2's were also rebuilt by NRE into GP38-3's.
All these engines were built to Norfolk Southern standards.
- Ditchlights on both ends - Plows on both ends - Air conditioners - Spare knuckle baskets - EOT brackets on rear trucks - headlights on nose
The paint scheme I designed to use the colors of the New York State flag. The logo design was enhanced and custom decals produced by Jim at Highball graphics.
In 2010 additional road power was needed and 4 EMD SD70ACe's were purchased. In 2012 it was decided to adopt the use of slug technology and 4 GP40-3 / RP4 mother slug sets are current being built by Norfolk Southern in Altoona.
A strong traffic base provides a positive outlook for the NYAS.
Major traffic commodities include ethanol, lumber, and paper products. Bridge traffic is also a major traffic base. Norfolk southern and Canadian Pacific maintain overhead haulage rights. Essentially the traffic base is identical to today's D&H traffic base.
My railroad is contemporary and changes with the times. As real railroad sell and buy new cars so do I. I am very strict with what I buy for railcars. I use rrpicturearchives to track my cars so I can monitor them to see if they have been bought or sold or repainted.
I think I have created a solid base story for my railroad. Thanks again guys for all the kind words.
Shane

Thanks for that. I was curious as I have been planning and recently starting acting upon my plans for an NS owned D&H so I was wondering how we might interact. Looks like we are both doing similar things but from different angles and indifferent time frames.
Nice work though and good back story to go with it.

Here is photo of my newest NYAS car. It is used for paper service out of my freelanced Laurentian Papers coated paper mill.

It's like a hot cake on this forum. Strangely I will be painting my loco's similar to how you have but with NS style decals, so no nose stripes for me.

Who did you get to make the decals?

Highball Graphics did the logos, chevron striping, and the number board numbers.
The following decal sets completed the model:
- Highball Graphics yellow sill striping - Highball Graphics Ottawa Central decal set for the green first aid labels on the cab doors. - Microscale EMD/GE locomotive data for warning labels, numberboard gaskets and numberboard backings. - Microscale BN locomotive data for the American flags, and stop warning labels in the step wells. - Microscale NS Operation Lifesaver set for the yellow step edge stripes.
Jim at Highball Graphics does tremendous work and I highly recommend him.
