Hello,
I am a new member here, hailing from the upstate of South Carolina. I am an Alabama native, and it is the focus of my modeling efforts.
My favorite part of modeling is detailing my locomotives.. I model mostly the Seaboard Coast Line and the Wiregrass Central shortline.. I hope to model locomotives from both.
And yes, telling anyone I model SCL usually turns heads and I get pelted with "Why!?" so much that it gets rather annoying. Truth is, I love the simplistic locomotive paint scheme and they passed right through my hometown of Dothan, Ala.
Thanks! SCL/Frank

PWhat's wrong with the Penn Central? ;D There was a nickname for their logo.. Something like "mating worms"? Everyone in my area models the Southern Railway, so it is a bit difficult to show my SCL stuff! I don't mind though, the SRR doesn't really appeal to me (plus my last layout was all NS). I'll post some of my pics soon, I just started detailing one of my "split image" GP35's, not quite the typical SCL black and yellow.

The project got put aside and was never finished. However it is on my list of things to do. To many projects, not enogh time. dieseldetailer.proboards53.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=gen2&thread=95&page=1P

Thanks everyone for the kind words and warm welcome!
And RedP, that is a great E8A you have in the works! I have a few of those planned for the near future along with some Amtrak SDP40F's.. Should be an interesting project! The SCL used E8's well into the early 70's on freights and passenger trains alike.

Welcome, Frank! I was General Manager of the Alabama & Florida from 1986 to 1991, and several of the WGCR locos came through Opp on their way to Enterprise (mainly the ex-SP units and a GP10 from the MSDR). Looking forward to seeing your work on the WGCR power.

Wow! It just so happens that one of the projects that made my short list is an A&F GP9, #6076. I remember the A&F operation well, you folks were hauling a lot of pulpwood in the early days. The only thing holding me back is a good photo of their logos that I can make decals from.. I have been a WGCR fan since they started, mostly because they ruined my 4th of July family reunion with one of their derailments, the resulting soy cloud made the following week quite a trip! In the Summer months I reside about 50ft from their mainline; I have ex-CSX GP40's and the ex-SP GP9's models planned in the near future. I thought it was interesting that the A&F and the WC had a GP40 online in the late 80's/early 90's, #3023.. That is completely unheard of for a shortline.. I remember seeing it pass by, it seemed to be a monster compared to those the little GP7 and GP9's they had at the time.

Frank, I designed that logo (based on the old L&N style of lettering) and had a local sign painter in Opp put it on the locomotives. I think I also have a photo of the 6076 right after it was painted. I will dig around in my files and see if I have the old art work and photos on hand for you. When I was a contractor to Georgia Pacific Corp. in 1991, I did the logo for the Arkansas, Louisiana & Mississippi RR. If you ever see that one close up, you will notice I did it using a felt tip marker on a line drawing of the three states. Before I had a chance to refine it, they took it, had a peel n' stick label made and slapped that sucker on the short hood of a Geep! ;D

I appreciate that! The inspiration for the logo suits the line well, being an old L&N branch.
I plan on showcasing one of my SCL GP7's soon, and will probably post a step by step as I make an Athearn GP40-2 passable for SCL standards.
