Hello Guys
I'm in need of some input for a freelanced railroad. I'm more a western and northwestern modeler (I have many Milw an BN locos), so this is also where I'd like to have my road. Era would be 1965-1970+, mostly secondhand power (gives me the oppurtunity to run Alco's). I don't really want to go too much into the details on what business was served where. This railroad's purpose is it to let me run locomotives that otherwise don't fit. It's not meant to be a transcontinental railroad, yet should it be large enough to run longer trains with 3-4 2nd generation diesels. A small passenger train would also be nice. I thought of stealing the NP's lettering. The railroad would be the Pacific Northern. Not very creative, but this way I don't have to print my own decals.
You see, I have some ideas, but could use more input. Ideas on the name and paint scheme are especially welcome.
Sorry for my not too perfect english, but my Mom only tought me german :-)
Thanks in Advance
Samuel Roethlisberger

Sounds good, kinda of like the MRL as a bridge route. Heck your world you can do your railroad in place of the MRL. Then you can do exactly like you said and use your colors but the Northern Pacific paint scheme. I like it alot. If I had to choice one of your schemes I like the last one and add the front face of the cab including the number boards.

Hi Samuel, There was the Davenport Rock Island & Northwestern which operated in the Tri-Cities (now Quad Cities) area and was jointly owned by the Burlington and Milwaukee Roads. It began in 1884 as the Davenport & Rock Island Ry Bridge Co. In 1895 it became the Davenport & Rock Island Bridge Ry and Terminal Co. Finally the DRI&NW name was adopted in 1898. The trackage extends from Clinton, IA, to Carbon Cliff, IL, and includes the bridge over the Mississippi. Locomotives were mostly hand-me-downs from the Milwaukee and the Q until dieselization. After the first group of Alcos, the use of diesels from the parents was resumed. In 1970, CB&Q ownership went to the Burlington Northern, and later Chicago Milwaukee St Paul & Pacific ownership went to the Soo Line. This railroad was owned by both roads you model and fits the model of what you are looking to do. Here is a link to a photo of one of the engines www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=2302095 You could use this paint scheme and add the Pacific Northern road name. Hope this gives you some ideas Erik

Hi Erik
I did not even know of this railroad... Must have been a very small one. Probably too small for me tu justify SD45's.
Thank you
Samuel

I like this one. Nothing fancy but slightly more stylish.

The perfect prototype for running Alco's in the Pacific NorthWest was the SP&S. Merged into BN in 1970, it was all Alco except for a handfull of Baldwin and EMD switchers, an E-7, a few GP-9's and F-3 and F-7's. They had FA-1 and 2's, RS-1, 2, and 3's, Alco switchers, 2 C-415's, quite a few C-424 and C-425's, and 10 C-636's. Just before the BN merger, they had some GP-38's on order, but they were delivered to BN in BN paint so they don't count. Soon after the BN merger, many other BN Alco's, primarily RS-3's and the ex-NP RS-11's, joined the SP&S units on the old SP&S lines, many remaining in their original paint (with new BN numbers) for years before repainting or retirement. Most of the Alco's were active until traffic downturns in the early 80's. John Hello Guys I'm in need of some input for a freelanced railroad. John, The SP&S is a very interesting railroad. But I'm looking for something more independent. Here's one of my ideas: The UP did not build it's own route north from Utah to Portland. But my freelanced Railroad did. It would be pretty much everything the UP has north of Green River and Ogden. So my Pacific Northern has a lot of interchange with the UP and also interchanges with the DRGW. Sam The perfect prototype for running Alco's in the Pacific NorthWest was the SP&S. SP&S is a good choice. We have a guy on the Frisco site, that did some research and decided on a abandoned line that is now gone. He picked an area, and modeled parts of the old towns, sidings and so-forth. I kinda wish I had thought of that. Some railroads are made up of hundreds of small railroads from the early 1900's. Just a thought. Bill Jackson
