Just toying with the idea of replacing the stock too-long Athearn snoots on a few "American" SD40-2's with some Cannon & Co parts for a CP unit. I'll probably just strip the entire thing and redo it as per Canadian prototype. Too many Canadian-specific differences, and I'd like the earlier Action Red paint job with 5" stripes instead of the 8". As most of CP's had 108" noses and C&C doesn't make that part, looks like I'm going to have to slice and dice their 116" nose.

Why not use the Deatail Assoc./Smokey Valley 108" nose?

The 102" nose kit from Detail Associates, if I recall, came to them from Smokey Valley by way of Train Station Products. It's a good alternative but it doesn't quite have the same feel as a Cannon kit, and you have to make it fit the sub-base. Of course, you could use the super-rare Canadian Prototype Replicas nose...

Forgot to mention, you may have to splice a left (conductor) side piece from a regular nose kit with the snoot to get rid of the access door on the side that doesn't exist on the CP units.

Yup, the access door is going to be filled with putty and sanded. It's recessed quite nicely in the nose so won't require much work to eliminate.
The DA kit is also discontinued IIRC. I figured, if I'm putting a C&C cab and interior in it, I might as well use their nose too...I have an 81' for an early CP unit too.

Yeah the early's had the 81", the 102" didn't come until the 5700s. Don't forget the Cdn steps! without them its just another US loco Here's a build pic of my 5647. Notice it had SD40 style subbases, they were this way until the high 5600s when they went to the dash 2 subbases... Your Athearn model also has text and numbers that slant way too much. I'd mask the MM and repaint the red, nothing better than a painted MM! I also might have a spare Canadian Prototype replica nose, lemme check...

Yeah, I was thinking doing an entire strip/repaint on it with the steps, new C&C cab & nose. plus some other details. Applying the multimark isn't so bad as long as it doesn't have to go over grilles. SD40-2's don't look to be too bad of a job except the rad part. C424's...well, there's a reason I'm doing my recent builds in M&G.

The 5674 was the last short nose, and 5675 had the first long one. One exception was the 5584, I believe. This has the angled blower duct. and long nose because it was a wreck replacement.
The dual flags units were the nicest. They had the cabs redone, and were most comfortable on long runs. I wish that we could turn back the clock, since I hate the AC44. I do like the ES 44 though.
