I have been working on stuff, but a lot of it has been wide body Athearn units I'm doing for club; I can't figure what else to do with them. (I know, throw them away lol!)
But I want to do a GP50 in yellowbonnet for the LAJ layout, which has FINALLY been started, pics when I progress. I'm not sure if I will do a phase I or II yet. The green/black GP50 I'm working on now is phII.
I see GP35u, 50 and 60s mostly in Youtube videos within the last 5 years, which is pretty much what I'm after. While there are some other units there, these are what I want to use. I might do another GP35u too! Luckily I found brass Qfans for this upcoming build as well.
I called HighBall Graphics because I didn't see the new Cannon cap fans on his site. He wasn't aware they were out, so we might have to ask when they're not listed. Highball said he would place a pretty big order somewhere between now and after Christmas.

Speaking of Q-fans, who makes them? Cannon doesn't have them listed, or am I missing something??

You can get Q-fans from Details Associates or you can order them from Athearn. These are plastic fans. Noone makes an etched Q yet.

Diesel have you read the Article in Model Railroader on the ATSF GP50PhII June 1996 its quite an extensive project! only a experienced modeler like yourself can do it! there is 5 different visible variations between PhI&II the blower housings/straight frame/toilet hatch/holes in the top corner of the pilots/and the anti climbers that are an EMD standard for locomotives its an from the frame up rebuild a very intense article enjoy your build brother!!

Hey guys, how's it going? So, yes, thanks for the kind words and mentioning that article. I do have that issue and it's my favorite MR of all time because of the in-depth detail even for the time. I'm not sure all the Cannon parts were available then as now.
So, I lucked out with Q fans. I have brass ones for both my 50 projects. One set is Overland, I wish I could tell you the other brand, but I lost the card that came stapled to the bag.
I just got the GP50 shell. Is it me or did they do a little retooling on this shell? I MIGHT NOT cut off the short hood & sub base as they look better than the old ones. Even the dust bin cover looks nicer. This is the phase II shell which only has the blower housing change. The sills are the same as the PhI, so is the turbo hatch, lack of toilet hatch.. BUT the step gardes are nicer! Go figure... It seems even the grille in the dynamic break hatch is nicer!

(Precision Investment Associates), perhaps? Three fans and the post-1980 exhaust silencer hatch for the (then) new Athearn SD40-2. Fans, handrail stanchions, and walkway tread plates (I think) so you could "Out-zenk Zenk" according to their ads.

yes, that's probably the ones, the set did come with a turbo hatch, pretty crude compared to what we have today though.

And then... Athearn comes out with a VERY nice GP50(at first glance anyway). I'll take a few of em, but they will need mods. The Genesis 50s don't have ditch lights and I can't tell from the pics, but is the sill straight all the way through? I saw it in person at Springfield, but was so surprised I forget. I think it was.
I want 2 in BNSF warbonnet & then this one will be in H1 paint for the LAJ. Then at least one for club. I'll let Athearn handle the warbonnet paintjob as that's the only one they released that I'd buy.

The video I saw for the new Genesis GP50s said that they will be offering both straight sills and stepped sills.
