Here is one of my personal favorite EMD rebuilds... HLCX 6091 is an SD40-2CLC, Also called an SD40-3. The unit has a long history, It was originally built for the CN as an SD40 model, The unit was later aquired by GCFX Alstom as of a number of other CN SD40's and rebuilt to an SD40-2. The unit was later purchased by HLCX and repainted into their classic ''blue n maroon'' scheme and put into lease service, It was not long after it was aquired by HLCX that the company RailAmerica
aquired it and several other HLCX EMD's for long term lease service on CORP rails. It and 3 other units, HLCX 6522 & 6061 were sent to Canada where they spent a good number of years on the GEXR shortline. What's interesting about this unit is that RailAmerica put their own ownership decals on it even though it still belongs to HLCX! The unit is modeled in this time period in service on the GEXR. Getting down to the model itself, I used an Athearn bluebox SD40-2 shell and chassie which went under major modifications. The most major changes you can see on the model are the replaced radiator grills, new fans, trucks, pilots, & end railings. Better noted details are those like the noselights, CN style ditchlights, cab mounted bell snowcovers, plow & airlines on the roof to give it a true canadian EMD look. The unit was painted with my own custom paint mixes sprayed onto it. The decals are custom made... Overall the project took about 6 months to complete but the time was well worth it. The only thing that is most noticeable is that the air tanks are stock, The ones on the real unit are 2 seperate tanks on each side with the fuel fillers between them, I will fix this later! Here are some pics of the model....
