The Portand and Northern rr and the Cadiz western rr are both subsideries of the sOKy. They are all three owned by Southern Star holding comany. The P&N runs south from Elizabethtown Ky to Portland Tn and on a branch line south to Gallatin Tn. It follows us31E most of its route and connects with the sOKy at Glasgow Ky. It is roughly 120 miles in length. It hauls coal into the newly expanded TVA Gallitin plant from a newly opened mine just south of Elizabethtown. It handles contract switching for csx in Elizabethtown and Portland Tn, Othr commodities hauled are lumber products and grain as well a very large industrial area in Scottsville Ky. Since thi is a altered history, the rail idustry in Scottsville allowed t to grow substanially. It was purchased by Southern Star in 1995. The Cadiz Western started out as the orginal Cadiz RR. However instead of shutting down in 1985 it prospered and in 1992 it was purchased by Southern Star. The line is 95 miles in length. It connects with the sOKy at Cadiz Ky and on to Mayfield Ky then down to Fulton Ky where it connects with CN. It has a branch to Bardwell Ky via Mayfield Ky where it is Headquartered. Including the 630 miles from the sOKy, the 95 from the Cadiz Western and 120 from the Portland and Northern, Southern Star opertes 845 miles of track. All in all the 3 railroads provide quality service in Kentucky. Coal is the main revenue, but with a ever expanding economy the railroads grow to meet the challenge.
