OK guys, having a senior moment. Trying to do some coupler installs. Was trying use a Kadee scale coupler and fitting it into a Details West Scale Coupler Pocket and it doesn't fit. The mounting end is too wide to fit in the opening, what the hell? Alright guys what couplers do I need to get? I don't want to go to Sargents most of my cars already have Kadee's.

On my package, it says to use Kadee #158 Whisker Couplers, and to file them a little narrower to fit.

Wayne,
I designed those pockets. What you need to do to the Kadee #58 to make it fit is simply file the points down a bit at the shank. Round them off and it will slide in just fine. Does not take much.

Now that Ive woken up, if I'm not using the supplied coupler box's that the manufactures provide how do you guys attach shells to frames. Starting to think that this might not be such a good idea. I'm building a few locos right now that will be used for running on layouts not for just display if that makes a difference. Any ideas on what people have done, pictures, etc.

Wayne,
When I designed those couler pockets, I also redesigned how the shell attaches to the frame.
You are correct. If you use the scale coupler pockets, your shell will be free flaoting.

Brian,
Was looking at your web page and looking to be able to do something similar to the EJ&E GP38 project. Need to look at the frame and shell together and come up with a way to make this work. Was trying to not reinvent the wheel. I like the look of a closer to scale pilot but want the locomotive to not fall apart if somebody picks it up and does not know it will fall apart. Don't want to ruin all this work that I'm trying to put into it.

First of all, I never let anyone else touch my models. Nobody but you knows what goes into building them.
Welcome to the world of design!

Being an old stick in the mud, I like the first DW pockets and a #5 box.

Randy, I'm right there with you on that one. I equipped my project Athearn SD9 with the older style and modified the frame, so slipping in the coupler boxes holds it all together. This let me remove the body mount pins off the frame.
