Wayne - It's too bad that Athearn used a much lighter blue than the prototype. I remember seeing the real one in the stock yards in Fort Worth and it was much darker, more like your photo.
Can't wait to see this one finished, though!

I can only offer one suggestion for darkening the blue... A while back I took in a pair of P2K NYS&W GP-18s that the factory painted in a yellow that was way too light. After correcting a lot of detail issues I set out to tone down the yellow, I used Pollyscale Grimy Black diluted about 80 percent with thinner. A few light coats toned the yellow down quite nicely, see below pic. The same method might work well for you, or perhaps even doing the same with some dark blue? I've got a CF-7 on the bench too, we'll have to compare notes on adding sound to these beasts. www.flickr.com/photos/34986955@N04/11788149465/

Started the re-motoring last night, I have a Stewart/Kato motor that was planning on using. To use the this motor I need to mount this engine backwards to use the existing motor mounts. OK, what do I do about the wiring for a Tsunami for the motor leads or will it matter?

You could reverse the wiring if you choose, it won't hurt the motor. Since you are adding DCC, it doesn't really matter as you can set the direction using one of the CVs.

Cool, that is what I thought. Just needed some assurance.

Wayne~
Do have any updates on this project that you can share? I seem to be working on my CF7's almost exclusively now and I would like to see how you are doing with the etched steps. I can also send you a shot of the GN TSU-1000 installed in my CF7's if you want.

I missed out on this topic
I love me some cf7's and kinda did what you did but when I tested my install the motor ran in the right direction with the kato motor..
It took me 5 sets of rtr trucks till I found the most quite
Kato trucks do fit but were missing brakes and were painted maroon and have been soaking in 90% alcohol and still won't come off!!
Anyhow the gn board would be my second choice and pretty easy and gives more room than the AT board
I chose esu loksound for this and ended up bulying more but soundtraxx does sound good too just hated there horn recordings I wish I kept my pics if this build i could have showed ya how I mounted everything.. The motor cradle tabs that locate the decoder had to be snipped a little and used a old shock rebuild kit from one of my Rc cars to mount it with.. It was a blue rubber seal I used as a washer/spacer
