Hey all, I have a yellow box Atlas in HO scale, RS-11. I have been adding a few minor details too and want to add sand hatches from DW. I cant find any photos on web or info if they had them and where they would be located. I could make a decent geuss but want to be accurate as possible, any help info. would be great. Thanks G

Yes, one on each corner. Pay attention to where the hinge is.

Keep in mind that not ALL railroads' RS11's had them in that location. The RS11 in Randy's photo is an ex-NKP RS11, but the N&W's ORIGINAL RS11's had them as a square box on the roof directly over the headlight on either end. www.flickr.com/photos/30274005@N05/3451415102/lightbox/

Gosh, I've looked at close to 100 photos of RS-11s Rudy, and I think your observation is an exception. Most of the units I've seen have them in the normal location. I would recommend to anyone modeling this or any other locomotive to check your prototype first. The OP didn't mention what road he was modeling. Just to confirm my observation, I actually located an ex-N&W RS11 in Scranton, PA yesterday (DL #351, ex-W&W #351, nee-N&W #351, built November 1957) and got some close-up photos:

Casey wasn't saying you were wrong Rudy, he was saying most of the RS-11s bought had the regular hatches.

Gosh, Rudy, I hope you were able to get other good detail shots of that old gal, she may not be around much longer if scrap prices go higher!!

Gosh, Rudy, I hope you were able to get other good detail shots of that old gal, she may not be around much longer if scrap prices go higher!! Unfortunately, not many. My girlfriend, who had just spent the entire day at Steamtown with me for Railfest, was nearing the end of her train tolerance for the day, and especially not looking forward to the two-hour drive home. I convinced her that the DL shops would only be a 10 minute stop on the way out of Scranton, so I had just enough time to run down the deadline behind the shops and get some quick photos of everything there while she waited impatiently in the car.

Is there a company who makes a sandhatch like the ones found on N&W RS-11s?

For the HO scale round sand hatch access cover try Cal Scale #574 or Detail Associates-2307.
