I am currently away on a ship, albeit one that is stuck in a ship yard, and have limited ability to do modelling at the minute but I have started this one after years of procrastinating. I am building a model of NS 34, a track geometry vehicle, converted from an NW slug unit that was originally an SD35. I started with an Atlas shell and when I first got it I cut down the hood, intending to remove the flash and excess; I got cutting this week and made a right old mess of it, the frame cracked and so I decided to start from scratch. I intend to use some steps from a Kato unit that is surplus, plus I have used C&C hood ends and the rest so far is plasticard. When I have finished I will mount it on a modified Athearn SD9 frame that has a few modifications remaining to finish it off.

Great work so far, especially considering how tough it must be to model anything in a cramped ship cabin! How on earth do you go about painting or gluing in there without complaints from your shipmates?

Well in the auxiliary fleet we have more generous accommodation. I am a Navigating Officer at the moment so I have a 20' square cabin, about 5' square en suite in one corner, with a queen sized bunk; all to myself. My desk is about 8' long with nothing but a PC work station so I have loads of room. I don't paint much because I have to do it outside and therefore its weather dependant, but I carry a limited amount of gear and weather freight cars or detail loco's.

I always wanted to build one of those things myself. How did you come up with the proper dimensions?? So far the work looks great!!

Well I know it is a former SD35 so most of the dimensions are there already, the rest I estimated. Not the most accurate method I know, but its close enough for me.

Looks like a lot of work was needed on the frame to get the scale width hood to fit. Really nice job!

Yes it was a bit of a job and is still a works in progress so hopefully I can get this one underway again soon. I basically need to get the sill and steps sorted (have donor steps) and then I can mount it, make handrails and paint it. Sent from my GT-I9100 using proboards

will you be adding a cab to it like it is now? I hate that NS did put a cab on it. But I think the one geometry car with the double cab is cool.
