My first task is to bring my 3 blue box GP 7' back to life. I have hard wired all 3, re-geared, and upgraded 1 can motor. I am now turning my attention to the shells. I have 2 front range shells that I am pleased with, but I want to convert one of the Athearn shells into C&NW # 1520 , the first diesel I got a cab ride in. I have all the parts I need except fans. This is where I need some help. I have not been able to find a good see thru 36" fan with blades, like all of the versions of modern diesels. I just ordered some Precision Scale 3989 - 36" cooling fan guards, but I am not sure of its quality yet. Any other recommendations , short of destroying a Proto GP for their fans? I am also looking for a good photo or detail of the winterization hatch. Did this hatch and screen actually cover one of the fans? I purchased a cover and see thru screen but am not sure what it really covered. MRC had a good article with roof pics in 09, but without a hatch. Thanks for your help, bruce

see thru fans on an Athearn widebody? WTH for? Destroy a proto GP to facilitate fans for an Athearn widebody? Seems counterintuitive... I assume you mean one of the new Genesis GP7s because an old BB widebody GP7 is only good as a doorstop. Details west also makes a (non see thru) good 36" fan casting...the only thing worthy of a widebody... AFA winterization hatches, here's a good pic... www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=844467

Look at Highlinersdirect.com and see their item #2101, Roof Fans. Maybe these can be modified to work.

The answer is quite simple for me. When I was younger, my Uncle who scratch built all of his HO fleet gave me two blue box engines a GP 7 and F7 for my birthday. He always said that anyone can dress up a near perfect kit, but the sign of a great kit basher is someone that can take a basket case and turn it into something worth admiring. So I am taking this shell and turning into something special. I have had to compromise on a few detail parts because of the Athearn shell, using smokey valley grilles that are close, battery boxes, ect. But it will be able to share the roundhouse with my proto and atlas GP7's without any problems. Thanks for the hatch pix, can I assume that this hatch just covered one of the fans?

Yes, Bruce, the hatch covers one of the fans.

Winterization hatch typically covers the #3 radiator fan (first rear rad fan) as shown in the photo, with the grille part right above the fan.
I would also second the use of the Detail West fan set iomalley mentioned. While not see-through, they do look good (and can be made to have some depth by spraying between the grilles black) and seem to have a nicer side profile than the P2K's. A number of people have been waiting for Cannon to do those parts, but so far no such luck.

I believe the fans on the Athearn CF7 are see-through, so perhaps you could order them from Athearn's parts department.

The DF1854, the 48" dynamic fan, is that the same fan as the two roof fans on Phase III non-DB GP9's and GP18's such as the Rock Island?
