I understand the premise behind the inclusion of this forum.I like the $100.00 minimum requirement but this little beast is not to be a Low Buck but a No Buck build.I have enough pieces and parts laying around I should be able to do this loco some justice. This will be a fairly long term project because it is to be worked on when I am not working on a ZS,N, On30 project,or another HO loco project.Anyway here are a couple starter pics. Two days in the strip tank a wash with Dawn and a coat of Krylon Ruddy Brown primer and I ended up with this. In the chance that someone does not recognize the shell it is a TYCO the chassis is from a Proto GP-9.

Another day's progress.Steps are opened .origonal chassis mount slots are filled and shell is in white primer.I must have looked at 100 pics before I found a sideview showing fuel tank details (not started yet) The proto pictures I have found show one more step below the cab doors.I'm not sure how I can add this or even if I want to. Project is still cost free. ;D

If they're thick enough you could drill into the bottom of the steps and bend + add wire for that extra one.
Hmm, any prototype in mind or is this a freelanced build?

I like your starting point just for the fun of it. It should look better already for getting rid of that thick factory paint.
Food for thought...the trucks oughta be something more along the lines of AAR type B, not Blomberg B like the P2K comes with. But I don't know what the axle spacing should be or whether the Bowser sideframes are acceptable substitutes.

RF16 prototype info: Distance between axles is 9' 10", and truck centers is 28' 2". Overall length is 54' 8". The prototype measurements for the P2K chassis is 9' 0" truck axles, 31' 0" truck centers and 56' 2" overall. See this for proto info: gelwood.railfan.net/manual/rf16-om.htmlDick

AHM/Roco's RF16 is tons more accurate than the Tyco...
unless you're building a what if...

Sorry, I don't have a rivet counter's license.Aside from that this little exercise is to see what I can make for nothing (though I did invest $2.00 today). ;D

I believe you mean Model Power/Roco. Later re-issued by E&R, now reworked and avaiable from Bachman. You can usually find old Model Power RF-16 Sharks cheap at fleamarkets and such. John AHM/Roco's RF16 is tons more accurate than the Tyco... unless you're building a what if...

If that's the P2K version if the Athearn drive you can sub the U-boat B side-frames for the EMDs it has.

That is what I spent the $2.00 on. ;D It does make a difference in the looks of the old girl.Still trying to figure out how I am going to do the lower step below the cab doors. My wife liked the ruddy brown primer finish so I may just respray with that once I am done messing with this thing.

The Uboat side frames look much better (to me) than the EMD frames .I would say for me it was a well spent $2.00 ;D I think I have a workable plan for the front steps ,but some fuel tank detail will be next on the list (or at least a start at some).

Hi Randy, Those old metal bodied sharks are from Mantua. Hobbytown sold drives to upgrade them, I think they just adapted the FA2 drives for the sharks.

Model Power was the original importer. It was a joint deal with Roco, as was their FA. As far as the new Bachman model, I knew it was an all-new drive, but I'd have to take one apart to determine if anything is left of the old shell. The early AHM was an FM C-Liner, a totally different beast. The shared AHM/Life Like/Model Power engines were the ones produced by Mehano and imported by one or all at different times. John I believe you mean Model Power/Roco. Later re-issued by E&R, now reworked and avaiable from Bachman. You can usually find old Model Power RF-16 Sharks cheap at fleamarkets and such. John I could be wrong, but I thought it was AHM then Modelpower made by Roco. The Ertle version had the same body, but a whole new modern can motor. The Bachman is an all-new body and chassis and has no relation to the old Roco.

Interesting project.
I have a set of the newer DCC On Board Bachmann RF16's in the D&H Scheme. Besides a little weathering, which really was almost non-existant in the photos of the 1205 and 1216 while on the D&H, they were a bargain at $56 per and really have good details and pull well wither solo or together.

That's good to hear the Bachmann RF16s are good engines. I've seen the GE 70 tonner rubbished on other forums but with 5 of them as logging locos I can't fault them, nor their s... s... st... external combustion engines (them that arn't mentioned here )

Being a Michigan short line fan, Im thinking of doing this pair, cheaply, to represent 1205 and 1216 during their Michigan Northern years.

I have 2 Bachmann D&H ones. I ditched their decoder and installed NCE ones(I think). They run even better.
