Hello
This project kept me busy for nearly a year. After doing many resin car kits, I wanted to kitbash and engine. I chose EMD's SDP40 in BN green. I don't know why I chose this particular type. It's built on a Kato SD45 chassis. The long hood is from a SD40. The rear is scratchbuilt vor styrene and various Cannon parts. I worked from photos so it's probably not within inches, but it looks correct.

the addition of the extra doors on the longhood are seamless, nice job! I thought you were BS'ing us and just painted up an OMI, but she's Kato alright! Bravo!

Nice. Do you have a log of what you did to yours?

Nice. Do you have a log of what you did to yours? No, I don't. But it's not too hard to do. You need a SD45 and a SD40 shell from Kato, the rear pilot and steps of an Athearn SD40T-2 (blubox is enough), Cannon long hood roof, gp35 air intake and various doors. If you want to know what I used exactly, let me know and give me some time. Sam

Sorry I didn't post sooner, but it'd definately help to have a parts list.

I was gonna ask how much to buy that turkey, but you make the kitbash sound so easy. It really came out nice! Like railfan says, factory made.
It looks like you kept the Athearn cab, sub-base & short hood right? The windows at least look better than the blue box cabs used to. I did the same thing with my standard Rail/Ath shell. It keeps a nice consistancy over the whole model that way. Any chance you'll give us more pics? front, 3/4 shots...

Hey guys
I added a picture before painting. The details of the kitbash are more visible this way. Beside the whole kitbash of the rear hood, the walway on the firemans side also needs to be lenghtened. Just look at the picture before and after painting, as it has not been done in this picture. I worked in this order: 1st I built the hood, 2nd the walkway, 3rd the fuel tank and other small details. At least that's what I remember...
That's what I used: Kato SD45 with low mount brake cylinders Kato SD40 shell Athearn SD40T-2 shell (Bluebox), we only need the rear steps and pilot Cannon #HR-1751 Blank Roof Stock Cannon #HD-1017 Doors Cannon #HD-1014 Doors Cannon #RG-1402 Radiator Grilles (needs to be shortened) Cannon #ER-1806 Dynamic Brake Doors (for the small doors above the walkway on the long hood end) Cannon #ST-2030 Safety Thread and Step Kit for SD40T-2 PSC #3935 Handrail Stanchions DA #229-1104 Lift Tabs DA #229-2209 Eye Bolts DA #229-1003 Dual Pyle Light DA #229-1024 Dual Pyle w/ vertical Visors DA #229-101805 Firecracker Antenna DA #229-2201 Drop Grab Irons with Nut Bolt washers (they make a huge difference) DW #235-190 Leslie RSL-3L-R Air Horn DW #235-287 Snow Plow DW #235-126 Rotary Beacon (I'm not sure if all GN/BN SDP40 had the same beacons) Microscale #460-8725 BN Decals
and of course small stuff like MU hoses and Air lines.

Very nice. To answer your beacon question, they all came with Pyle Gyralights on the GN, then got BN standard Prime type, followed by Federal Commanders ( gumball ) then back to Prime , then nothing. Four changes during the GN / BN era All those parts are produced, and there a many photos on the web of all the changes. Again, good job !
