I've been asked by a member to make two CN units for him, SD40-2W 5357 and SD40u 6014. I haven't touched 5357 yet but 6014 is coming along. The SD40u is being built from a Kato SD40. [from cnrphotos.com] Most of the rough work on the cab and battery boxes is finished, however there is still lots of sanding to be done. As for the long hood all the modifications are completed. I'm still waiting on the anticlimber, steps and ditch lights from Railflyer to arrive (why they shipped my parts in two orders is beyond me)

Nice progress, those battery boxes looked like hard work but you got the nose sorted then?

Yeah, the nose was the easy part for sure.

How'd you fashion the cab? Very nice work, so far.

How'd you fashion the cab? Very nice work, so far. Wasn't easy to say the least. Took the stock Kato cab, cut off the numberboards/headlight section off, then cut the front wall out. I filled the hole where the numberboards were with styrene and then glued them on at an angle. Lots of careful filling and sanding for a perfect fit. Same deal with the nose. Started with a snoot SD40-2 nose and cut it to lenght.

I finally got the steps that were backordered since June and was able to make some more progress. I wasn't fully happy with the battery boxes however so I decided to make a new set, which aren't complete yet. It looks like I'm going to have to add treadplate to the front and rear of the engine as the addition of the steps forced me to remove it. There were also less issues with truck clearances with this model for whatever reason and they clear both the fuel tank and the steps perfectly.

Looking good Taylor. It's interesting how you paint what you can whereas I would paint the whole thing in one session, it's good to see how it's coming along though.

Well I like to paint all at once Neil, but that's when I'm not waiting on parts...which is rare as I can't hop in my truck and drive to the LHS. Since some sections are finished before others I like to do what I can while I'm waiting, sort of speeds up the process.

Taylor is making this model for me and I have asked him to retain the Kato fans as I don't want to use C&C fans at this point because if I did, I would want them on all of my fleet, and both cost and eyesight precludes that at the minute.
I am interested in capturing the 'feel' of the loco and not necessarily ever particular detail. Taylor has done that superbly.

If I could add one little thing tho, to shave off the nose located class lites, other than that, looks awesome!

Don't forget the red below the grey stripe behind the cab! Don't worry, I haven't, I did that on purpose.

See this is one of the reason I got Taylor to do this for me, that and my eyes! You guys know CN, I know NS.

Well I'm more of an MLW guy, so I have collaborated a lot with Sean (iomalley) and Eric (M636) in the past, both CN guys. NS really has (or had) some really neat power and has always been one of my favorite US roads. As for the class lights they're long gone.

I love some of the MLW's that roamed the Canadian roads but I am a bit modern for it. I've been considering regressing back to the early 90's though so I could have one floating around my roster eventually. It would be a toss up between a C630M, M636 or an M420W?

Preliminary decal work has begun, still need to complete the battery boxes however.
