Going through my collection and found these, A LL P2K Norfolk Southern GP60. Added DW Plow, DW AC unit, DW spare knuckles, DW horn + horn stand, DW trainline hoses, DA sunshades, DA mu hoses, DA ditchlights + MV lenses. simple weathering, detail painting, and dullcoat finished it up. Athearn Genesis Norfolk Southern SD45-2 Still a work in progress, but notched DW plow, DW trainline hoses, modified DA ditch lights + MV lenses, DW spare knuckles, 1 sunshade added on engineer side per the prototype, detail painting. Still needs weathering, dullcote, windshield wipers, and a few other odds and ends. Digitrax DCC added. Im horrible taking pictures lol Enjoy -Shane-

Great stuff Shane! Just about to start one myself. I have an undecorated older Athearn one and some Microscale Norfolk Southern Operation Lifesaver decals for the GP60.

Very Nice Shane! Thanks for sharing the pictures.
On the ditch lights, are they powered? If so, and I'm guessing they are, how hard was it to mount them? Did you use a surface mount LED or something else?
I have a number of Athearn/P2K diesel and would like to try my hand at detailing/ditch lights.
Best Regards, Scott

Hi Scott, I have absolutely no skill when it comes to electronics whatsoever. The Ditchlights are by details associates with mv lenses mounted directly to the upper pilot per the prototype. This is the practice for most of my locomotives as I put so much effort into detailing my locomotives I don't want to have to take things apart to fix electronics. For me I keep what is inside the engine as simple as possible. I appreciate the kind words fellas.

More details on the ditchlights, I use exclusively the plastic Detail Associates ditchlights and I modify them to fit my needs. I first paint the light housing, then I glue in the mv lense with Elmer's glue. Then the housing with lense is glued to the stand. Then the stand with assembled light housing is glued to the locomotive.

Very nice work! I've always been a fan of the simple, yet elegant looks of the NS locomotives...

I've got one of those NS SD45-2's. I really like the hulkish look to them in ex EL fashion. Mine will go into the 91% in the not to ditant future.
With the way the manufacturers are turning out some really decent looking models, some only need simple enhancements and a bit of weathering.

Always a big fan of the 45-2 and Athearn did a great job on these.
But I wil give LL credit on the GP60,and with all the details added really makes that model pop.
Very nicely done on both models and this shows even the lastest models available from the manufactors still need fine tuning to get the right look of the prototype. Thanks for sharing..

Nice job. I agree. The P2k GP60 just needs a few parts added and they look great. Do the ditch lights work? I like that one even better than the SD45-2.
I will do my SD60s the same way except I think the cab on those should get a Cannon cab replacement. The underframe doesn't have all those half way decent decent details that the GP60 has either.

thank you for the kind words gentlemen. The ditchlights do not work. I spend so much effort on my frieghtcars and such and detailing my engines that I have no time for the electronics side of things. It drives the guys nuts at the club when I just have the simplest decoder possible placed in my engines, and they work far better and for far longer than there's that have fancy decoders and sound and wires everywhere. If you take the shell off my engines the only wire visible are the wires going to the pickup on the trucks. Besides I feel the mv lenses look much better than bulbs, and in the right lighting they look like functional headlights.

I'm with you on Detailing pretty much the same, just all the nice add on stuff from DW and DA, makes a world of difference and your pictures prove,
Myself, I don't bother with Ditch lights but on a few engines, they are a pain I think, and myself, I Model such a wide area range, I don't need um, not even t the dash 9s I have will have um unless nonworking ones, so I'm good :-)

Great work. Just listening to the comments and seeing the pictures is an inspiration. I am new to detaiing and weathering. I am at a loss at times so I intend to do my work on old inexpensive rolling stock until I have something that at least approaches the fine work you and others have shared here.
One question I have to ask. The issue maybe simple for you all but for me it is a bit confusing. I have no idea how to pick the manufacturer or the "level" of "quality" in road engines for my work. Let me give you some background; I've decided to use a basic dcc set up however I've decided to also incorporate Ring Engneering's Radio control. Therefore I am looking at locomotives that are either DCC equipped or DCC ready. That tends to eliminate in many instances the "high end" models but I end up with just about as much invested. My choice but the is a reason I chose this. Can you all give me some guidelines in choosing maker and models to start?
Appreciate your feedback.

Hello, I don't know how much of a help this is but if I plan on equipping an engine with a decoder it must be a very simple plug in. Athearns, Atlas silver series, and Katos are my sole choice of locomotives. I use simple digitrax decoders with no sound. The simpler the better for me. That being said only half my engines are equipped with dcc and those are only equipped so that I may run operating sessions with my fellow modelers. My newer engines are left in analog. I would rather spend $150 in detail parts and have a locomotive that works flawlessly than having to fool around with the internal electronics all the time when equipped with dcc and sound. Just start with painted models and simple details and as you get better you can add more. I'm not sure if I answered your question but I hope that helps.
