Probably in the wrong forum, but i was wondering if anybody knew where i could get some basic plans for a simple diesel service facility. I want to try my hand at some basic scratchbuilding, and figured a big, boxy, open building with a pretty open interior would be fun.
Model Railroader just had a couple of articles on building a freelanced ramp, but i'm looking for something a little more simple and smaller. So far the plan is to keep the cutting to a minimum by using a whole sheet of styrene, laid on it's side, with styrene I beam and spare supports from an old Walthers rolling mill. The beams will probably stand on short sections of plastic tubing to simulate concrete footings, or whatever they are called. I copied the craneway supports from the walthers beams, and intend to use I beam with smaller scale rail to support a basic, scratchbuilt overhead crane.
The overall structure will have a flat roof, probably be wide enough to accommodate two tracks side by side with a raised walkway between them, and each side. Not sure what i'll be doing for windows or siding, but i'm leaning towards a worn red brick, printed out on thin paper.
I'm a little shaky starting out, though. It's my first scratchbuilding effort, first real structure, and i'm terrible when it comes to math and cutting things straight! And since i'm just kind of winging it, i don't know roughly how far apart to place my vertical supports, or what to mount the building on, or if i'm even on the right track! I'm on a very tight budget, so i can't just buy a commercial kit. So, if anybody could point me towards a build thread or could offer any tips, i'd be very grateful!
