Has anybody milled a frame using a cross slide vise and a drill press? i need to modify some Bachman Spectrum split frames in HO. Not a lot of room under that shell for a decoder

Probably not a real good idea - as a drill press is not designed with bearing on the shaft to take a side load on it. DP are designed with vertical loads, and so they have a different type of bearing which is designed to handle those loads. Using a drill press as a mill will wear it out abnormally fast.
Use a hacksaw or grinder instead.
I do offer mill work if you need to have it done. Regards, Brian

Hey zakc,
I did the same work on my Bachman SD-45 split frame for a decoder. I used a hand grinder with a cut-off wheel laid semi-parallel to the frame (held in a vise). It actually came out quite well.

Try an angle grinder or a dremel tool and then file the metal down smooth (use something like you'd use to sharpen lawn mower blades)
