DODX vans (sorry cabooses) have rooftop A/C units...albeit cut into the cupola gable ends...

Also, if you're putting AC in your van, you should probably remove the roofwalk.

These aren't going to be too prototypical as there for my freelanced modern version of the K&T. The real K&T didnt even use cabooses but I plan to have them on the roster.
I figured keeping the roofwalks on would provide easier access to the A/C units for maintenance crews to make needed repairs or install anything on the roofs.
(on a side note, tryin to read up on FRA rules so, I guess my K&T would fall under those rules since it interchanges with NS?) so no roof walks? Probably another topic to get into later lol.....

Two units would be more than sufficient for a caboose... unless you were maybe modeling Saudi Arabia or India.
"Those DODX cabooses are cool!"
Those cars are not cabooses... they are "Guard Cars" to accompany nuclear material cars.

Ive not seen one of the DODX cars in person but I have seen some videos where they were on the end of a freight, guess they were being transported to where they were needed.
No desert modeling here, just the Kentucky back woods lol.

Sweet pictures!! Now I remember where Im getting the caboose A/C idea from. I seen some pics like these here a while back, may not have been the same RR (or could be) but I remember seeing a set-up like that. Thanks for the post!

Looking at the DODX car compared to yours, I see they put the units on the cupola, probably so the cool air will hit there before it drops down to the rest of the car. I'm sure it wouldn't be unbearably hot in the cupola even with the AC units down below, but it seems like it could get a little warm up there.

MRL has A/C units on the caboose's modified to carry the CANAC equipment from RCL service. As far as I can tell, the A/C unit is there to keep the hardware from overheating, since the photos I've seen tend to indicate the have been gutted of all amenities. The A/C unit mounted on these are similar to the "R/V" style units seen on recent locomotive rebuilds. That's where my ideas to mount a genset and A/C on a caboose came from. Since it's my railroad, might as well make sure my lil' switchmen and road crews are comfortable during the summer!
