that's nice but I think it would look better in southern paint. What Locomitive sacraficed the high hood.

No loco sacrificed their high nose for the conversion......a simple trip to the Atlas parts department on-line catalog will get you all the high-noses you want for $3.00 each. It is nowhere as nice as the Cannon high nose, but for $3, it does the job (especially painted black!)

I am building this for a friend, who does not have the time to do it himself. It is a Kato SD-45 with an Atlas high hood grafted on, with some brass steps and some scratchbuilt pilot details. Nothing fancy, just something he can use on his layout. I still have to add a few other details after it is painted. I know the trucks are wrong, but that is the unit he gave me to work with. Plus, he did not want to spend too much money on it....times are tough!!! It will be painted in Norfolk Southern colors, road number 1795, which I believe might be the only high-hood SD-45 painted in NS colors. There were at least six SD-45's that made it into the NS scheme. Three from Southern, 3106, 3124 and 3145. Three also came from the N&W, 1704, 1766 and 1795. Bob

Thanks for that info HotShot on the additional units in NS paint. Anyone have some photos of the ex-Southern units painted in NS colors??
I am hoping to get some paint on the model today.

The Atlas high hood isn't a separate part. You have to order a long hood casting from Atlas and then cut off the short hood. This is easily done as the cut is made in a non-visible area.
By way of explanation, Atlas EMD shells are usually made in three parts - the hood assembly, the cab, and the sill with battery boxes cast in.
Atlas offers high-hood SD35s, GP38s, and GP40s in various phases. Hood castings tend to cost in the $3.00 arena. The short hood for an SD35 is really only correct for an SD35 or GP35 due to sandbox door configuration and walkway lights, but the short hood for the GP38 or GP40 is correct for pretty much any 40-Line or Dash Two loco.

I'd much rather use the Cannon part. The Atlas hood looks funny.

You need the filler piece for the handbrake area also. If you look at the picture you posted, it has a big open hole.

If you're handy with a razor saw, you can reuse the handbrake recess from the short hood that you cut off. Failing that, you can make a handbrake recess from styrene and use an Atlas, cannon or Details West handbrake ratchet.

As an Atlas direct parts dealer it seems to me that they get $6 for a high hood shell plus $7 shipping and a Cannon high hood would actually be a cheaper way to go...
