Sean,
I think that would be a great idea if Plano would do them. He dose a different style for H.O. emergency vehicles and service trucks. Sunrise Enterprises used to make two different styles knuckles busters early and late along with hinges. I still have a few left but they only get used on real special projects. It would also be real nice if the different GE style latches could be done also.

there's knuckle busters on this etching kit

I helped procure this set and have the drawings in cad.
Sean, are these etches thin enough to be surface mounted? Or do they need to be recessed? If recessed, how would you go about it? Sorry for the beginners questions, it's just that I'd love the challenge of creating one-off long hoods! I don't have a layout at the moment, so detailed locos have become the priority.

Yes, they are designed to be surface mounted.

Yes, they are designed to be surface mounted. In that case, I'd be interested if Plano can be persuaded to do a run. What about hinges on the same etch? That way, you can do 2, 3 or 4 hinge, 2 or 3 catch doors of any height. That only leaves louvres to make for the odd panel (although doors with louvres are available as you know).

That's a nice CN Geep there. The Proto is probably best but lacks fundamental details like the batten straps between the longhood sections, and the roof fan hatches weirdly wrap down the radius edge. Actually, the P2K's do have the batten strips, but it varies like on the prototype: The P2K GP7's have them looping all the way around the DB section and down the hood sides. The P2K GP9's have them looping around just the DB hatches like the prototype. I've just checked my Phase 1, 2, and 3 units to verify. The GP18 is the model missing the strips. If you want a model shot comparison: dieseldetailer.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=yack&thread=9023&page=1#66188Actually, that interchangeable GP7 hatch on the Bachmann throws it all off for non-DB units. Almost all non-DB GP7's except for a few very late ones had the taller engine room doors. The DB ones had shorter engine room doors (except for that #1) so the DB hatch would fit, like on the Bachmann. Atlas & Proto both nailed this on their hood variations.

Update! Decalling done (except for builders plates which were ordered) end handrails on, and need to fabricate the side railing from Precision Scale stanchions and steel/brass wire. Also, need to finish the MU hoses and tall MU stand. Also decalled the RS18 tonight too...

Hi Guys, I don't mean to hijack this tread, but I have been trying to get Woody at Archer to do knuckle buster latches. So I encourage everyone to e mail Woody and encourage him to do these. Erik Why would we not just get this part from Railflyer since they've already made them? There are other parts still not made we could ask others to make for us.

Railflyer knucklebusters are only meant to work with their photoetched doors. To use them as surface mount, would mean they would stick out too far.

Snazzy Geep! Put it behind an F7Au and plow and you're all set to run a classic Southern Ontario plow extra! (see www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=7382)To touch on something mentioned earlier in the thread, I was doing a bit of research, and found that the curved roof panels on the sides of the P2K Geeps are actually prototypical. Refer to this photo posted on Plano's section of their site where someone was measuring a GP9: www.planomodelproducts.com/GP9pics/P1000232.JPG

It needs more than quick-n-easy Athearn stanchions...

If you find a source for the L shaped stanctions, shoot me an email buddy. Merry Christmas!
