Here is a progress pic of my Rock Island AB6. For those not familiar with them, yes it is a real engine. EMD built two of them for the RI for their Rocky Mountain Rocket passenger train. It is basicly an E6B with cab controls. They were heavily modified over they're life and spent their last years in commuter service in the Chicago area. My model represents the engine as it was in commuter service. There is still a lot of work left, but its to the point were its starting to look like somthing. It started as a proto 2000 E6B. The doors, pilot and rear roof hatch came from an Inter-mountain undec F7 kit. everything else is scratchbuilt from styrene. Enjoy, John.

Welcome John. That is some incredible work!! Very interesting. I have heard of the units the C&NW made out of B units, but not these ones

John!
Very nice indeed! I had a friend who passed away a couple of years ago who scratchbuilt one as well. Keep up the great work! ;D

I never knew that EMD built them as-is. RI ended up with lots of E-units and I know that some B's were rebuilt into A's by CNW, but I always thought that these were custom-built units...

I never knew that EMD built them as-is. RI ended up with lots of E-units and I know that some B's were rebuilt into A's by CNW, but I always thought that these were custom-built units... The Rock recived quite a few E8A's & B's from the UP, but none were converted into A units like the CNW did. The Rock Island converted a hand full of the A units to HEP for commuter service, and the rest ended up in passenger service at first, then frieght service later, many never being repainted from their UP colors. Here is an EMD builders photo of one of the two AB6's. If you look closely, you can see they only had one prime mover as built. The space where the rear prime mover would be was a baggage compartment. (see the baggage door on the side?) The second prime mover was added in the late 40's earlie 50's.

A little update on this project. I had to put this on the back burner for a while because I was re-powering and painting a brass steam engine as a Christmas present for my old man. I've been working on the chassis. I cut away the large chuck of frame where the old fuel tank and motor were mounted. this is normally hidden by the skirts on E units, but this engine has no skirts. I cut the frame off flush with the bottom of the shell to get that see through look above the fuel and air tank. The motor will be mounted on its side on top of the frame. I also got rid of the stupid separate bearing journals with Detail Associates parts. The next two pics are of the roof detail. The Rock Island removed the roof top grills revealing the radiators. The radiators are modeled with sheet and strip styrene. They are just held in with tape for now since it will be easier to paint and weather with them separate. So don't mind the gaps. The oil coolers are scrathcbuilt from bits of styrene and brass strip. the long brass pipe connects the front and rear coolers. It still needs a hand full of grab iorns applied, and a few other small details, but its just about ready for paint. The Farr grills that will cover the intake vents on the sides of the unit will be bare stailess and won't be applied until after its painted. John

I hope someday to be able to do work of that magnitude John. Very impressive! I'm sure you can do it. There is nothing magical about it. Like everything else it just takes time and some practice. I've been detailing diesels on and off since I was 14 or 15 (I'm 30 now). I would be embarrassed to show you some of my work from back then. I have recently started scratchbuilding steam engines out of brass, which has a whole new learning curve. John.

WOW, that is impressive!!! I always wanted to build one of those myself.
Several years ago a placed a large deposit on a conversion kit to build one of those units, only to have the "company" take my money, and others also, and disappear.

Several years ago a placed a large deposit on a conversion kit to build one of those units, only to have the "company" take my money, and others also, and disappear. I remember that. The company mainly built Missouri Pacific E unit kits right? I wish some of his etchings were still available. If I remember right, the owner got sick and shut down the company. Its a shame you lost your money to them. I remember he wanted a good chunk of the money up front.
