In teh photos on the first page of this thread, I noticed a difference between UP 3042 and UP3045. Unit 3042 is riding on SD9 style trucks and unit 3045 is riding on I guess they are called Type II Flexicoil trucks.

I wanted to add that is does not look like an economy build to me. This model is looking very nice. A few years back I wanted to build one for fun, but never got around to it. Seeing yours sure does help with what to start with and what needs to be done to make it happen.
Thanks Randy, I may have to add these back to my list of models to build.

Thank You Brian, mine does have SD-9 trucks, but I would imagine back in 1965 they all might have had them. Railroad shops have a penchant for changing things around.

Wow. Nice work as always Randy. I have the book Diesel Demonstrators. It also says the units were painted black with white lettering. It does have 2 pictures of unit #434. The one that lacked the flared rads painted in a Santa Fe blue with yellow ends scheme. It also shows one picture of #7000 and #7001. (434D and 434C). On the Canadian Pacific. In That picture like on the cprdieselroster.com site. They look a dark blue. Even on the cab side where the old EMD 434 number was painted over in black. And the new CP 7000 number was applied. you can really see the difference. between the black and blue. Bill.

I have a photo someplace of Demonstrator 434-E and a N&W SD-35 pulling a train on the Peavine. Wish I could find that slide! Thanks for the compliments.
I've done a lot of searching, and asked quite a few people, and I think I may be the only one to ever build one of these.

Hey Randy, since you built your SD40X model using the late battery boxes with only two Louvors on each side you might want to make yours EMD 434F. It is the only unit with flared radiators built this way. The 434A-434E have two Louvors on the conductors side and six on the engineers side. Totaly unique to these SD40X's.

That sucker is going to look real good in black Randy. Real good. I can see it paired up with some black high nose SD35's. Heck N&W was taking delivery of its SD35's as it was testing the 40x's. They bought SD35's so late pretty much right into 40 series production.

Tom, Prototypes not built refers to locomotive models never offered in scale. I know it's been a long time since the board was instituted, but that is what this board is for. An SD-40X has never been offered in plastic by any company. Brass, yes...but this forum is about detailing not how much we can spend on a brass import. Please read the Board Description below.
Board Description: This board is for prototype diesels that were built by the locomotive builders, but have not been made by model railroad manufacturers. Examples of a Prototype not built would be a Demonstator or a One of a Kind Unit. You may have to use a shell made by for example ATLAS and add parts from a Proto 2000 model to get your desired results.

I'd like to thank Gerry of Minuteman Trains for his help with this project, and some of my other projects also. I think I have him talked into joining here.
