I couldn't justify running a rare UP SD40X in the unsignaled branches of the River Run out in BFE Ohio.

that HLCX unit isn't the only one left. CN still(at least they did until recently) Roster IC 6071, the orginal SD40X, although its classified an SD40-2R now Close, IC 6071 was built as an SD40A (SD40 components on an SD35 frame).

hmmmm...after seeing that unit (HLCX 6399) gives me an excuse to model one, 6399 was at one time part of the MPI lease fleet! Here is a little information I could dig up on it: HLCX 6399 (ex TFM 1507, HLCX 6399, MKCX 9051, PLM 3041, UP 3041 nee EMD 434B) This unit rebuilt as an SD40M-2 by MK Rail for PLM and later bought for their own lease fleet. Unit has the flared radiators and retains its as built look save for having 48 inch pan top style fans replacing its original flat top style ones. Unit is on lease to CSX presently. I see a MKCX 9051 in my future AWESOME BUILD RANDY!

This is a great buildup of one of my favorite locomotives! Nice work!
Here is some history I know: IC #6071 was the first demonstrator built #434. It was also the very first locomotive to be built with EMD's new 645 prime mover. This locomotive was first sold to GM&O #950. Then aquired by ICG #6071. Later rebuilt by IC and losing its dynamic brakes. I'm pretty sure #6071 has been recently donated to a museum. There is one other SD40X roaming the rails besides HLCX #6399. It's ex-UP #3046 built with flush radiators. It has been rebuilt and works for the Wheeling & Lake Erie.

Thank you for the compliments, it's an easy conversion. I would have got it done in 11 days if I had used an Atlas drive, but I modified a Proto 2000 SD-7 drive that I had. It's the same wheelbase.

I just looked at the OMI SD40X and it has a tank drive...yuck!
I bet the Atlas powered SD40X not only looks better but runs way better then the OMI!

Hey Randy, you need one more important detail piece. Cannon Pt#1806 extended range dynamic break doors. All 40X's had them. I still love this build! Question: what is the black strip just in front of the radiator grills?

It's a splice filler.

I see. You just removed the first radiator section on the 45 radiator. I'm using a PK2 SD45 radiator and dynamic section for mine and I shortened it just in front of the molded batten strip. I've run into a roadblock though. I cut out the middle radiator screen instead of the first. I put the first and the third section together and now the the two sections are not long enough to reach the dynamic part where I cut it. I think I'm going to retry it your way.

It's a cut and fit operation for sure. I did mine so quick because I've been cutting & splicing model car bodies for 52 years. The dynamic door is not present on the demonstrator I'm modeling, they must have been added later. I'm not making a Union Pacific SD-40X, mine is going to be like the originals that tested on the Norfolk & Western.

You know, now that you mentioned it, I think I do have a photo of one of the demos without the dynamic doors. In black, the demos will look right at home coupled to some NW units! I wish I could find some pictures of the two demos with flush radiators in their origional black paint.

Here's a pic of 434 E&F testing on the Norfolk & Western. And I do see an outline of those doors. Darn! I have some, now I gotta get into the parts box and find them. Thanks!

Yep! I'm really surprised EMD didn't have a logo on them.

Here's an update on the SD40X. I installed the Cannon & Company Dynamic Doors with Drip Rails.
