"You might be better off with the SW1200 + SW1000 for a nicer looking model. "
This would be the best way to go for one of these units... the cab and frame are correct, all you would need is the hood.

I basically have four ideas:
1. Using the stock IMW shell. Which looks bad.
2. P2K SW with the Athearn hood. A possibility, the P2K cab is slightly different from an SW1001 cab, and Athearn needs slightly modified.
3. IMW Shell with Athearn hood. Correct cab, Athearn hood needs modified but not as much.
4. Use the IMW shell as a base and replace the doors and grills. Correct hood and cab, but I have to cut down 24 Cannon doors.
I have a feeling I'm not going to decide on which route to take until I have the pieces for each one in front of me.

Just a quick update...I have procured two P2K SW9s. My current plan is to use the SW9 cab/frame/walkways with the Athearn SW1000 hood. While, there will be some differences, notably, the cab being about a foot and a half too short, it should be close enough for government work.
For the hood, I'll have to fill in the handbrake recess, redo the taper at the cab end, and scratchbuild the front sandboxes.

And its not quite that easy. The Athearn shell doesn't quite fit on the P2K chassis. Stay tuned for a more indepth analysis.

Well...here's the bad word. The P2K SW9 + Athearn SW1000 is far from easy. The Athearn shell is too narrow to fit the P2K chassis. Also the base of the P2K cab and the fuel tank are wrong. I needed the hood and cab base from the Athearn shell, and the walkways and cab from the P2K shell. I cut down the P2K cab and modified the walkways. So here's where things stand: The hood needs shortened some, and also raised up a bit. I need to remeasure the cab base, it may need shortened also. I have to mill the P2K chassis down some for the hood to fit, and rework the fuel tank. Nick

Over a decade ago, a fellow made a SW1001 just like your doing. The article was in either Prototype Modeler or Mainline Modeler, both now defunct. He was doing a Corinth & Counce RR locomotive. I think he noted that the cab is not long enough and sat too high, the cab base isn't correct and a few other things that couldn't be fixed then. See if you can find the issues with that build in it. And it just popped into my head that it was also done in RMC for a Long Island RR locomotive, may have been the Dremel winner, but I'm not positive about that. I've always thought that using a Cannon GP cab side walls and the front and back walls of a Cannon SW cab would give a better looking cab and maybe using a Cannon base would help, both not available when those articles were done. Good luck and I hope some of this helps. Joe Hueber
