That looks great. It may have been a lot of work but it was well worth it.

Bob, that's a really nice looking engine. Modeling northern tier railroads, I expect to see snowplows but but they seem odd on roads like the Southern. They must take the Boy Scout motto to heart.
Robert, thanks for the Keith Jackson reference. I miss him calling college football games.

Great Job Bob, hard to believe that started out as an Athearn engine, milling that frame has made all the difference in the world in the appearance of the engine. Excellent job on the weathering and all of the underframe detail! I have nothing but Atlas engines on my roster with the exception of one LL P2K GP38-2 and the two Athearn Genesis MP15AC units, I might have to take another look at those Athearn GP38-2 now that I know Brian can mill the frames!

Very nice! I've been trying to think of what I could do with a spare Atlas Trainman GP38-2 that came in a trainset that I bought primarly for the 3 CNW covered hoppers in it, and I'm thinking a Southern or NS unit may be the front runner...

Scott and all, Having the chassis milled and lowered made a world of difference in the appearance and believability of this locomotive and it's amazing that such a small item made such a tremendous difference. Not only was the chassis lowered, but I also chose to have the Athearn metal fuel tank area milled so I could make use of one of their new plastic tanks, which in my opinion gives so much more accuracy toward the prototype and places the Athearn Blue Box GP38-2 model, although not Genesis quality, in a class all by itself. Bob, do you have a source for those tanks? I've looked and they are not available.

Bob, great work. Having the frame milled to the correct height and adding the plastic fuel tank really brought this one together. Do you have any plans for more 1st generation stuff? Charlie

Charlie Charlie, I'm going to begin conducting a mini clinic on the new Atlas U23-B soon and then I'm going to begin work on a Southern GP-50 using many of the same techniques I used on the GP38-2. I see that Athearn is about to introduce their new GP-7 and this might be a fun project to work on someday. Bob
