The chain for the handbrake really caught my eye. Where do you get PE chain?

Robert, nice work so far. Thanks for all the in progress shots.
I must have missed Samurai Hobbyshop on the old SNL.

The chain for the handbrake really caught my eye. Where do you get PE chain? Thanks for the kind comments, guys! It's still very much a work in progress! The PE chain came from a website called texnrails.com. It is listed as their 72 LPI chain. This is my first use of it on diesels. Previously, I used it for end rail chain on HO scale passenger car platforms.

Robert,
I'm starting a GP38AC also. Could you explain how you did the Dynamic Brake Housing and maybe some close up photos. I'm trying to plan how to accomplish this. Was thinking about adding styrene to make the extended housing and using the C&C doors.

Robert, Nice job so far! The IC units are the the only (I think) GP38AC's to be built in 1970. They do not have the '71 built support ribs on the blower housing like most other AC's. Do not forget the water sight door on the engineers side. This was a cool feature unique to IC GP38AC's.

Oh Robert, I also used an Athearn PAF box and front taper of the dynamic blister for my hatch. If you look at dynamic brakes with the PAF box built from EMD, there is a small space between the PAF box and the front taper. It is not even rendered on the Atlas piece but rendered very well on the Athearn one. You can see the different color of the Athearn piece on my GP38AC pic above. Plus the Athearn PAF box has better detail and shape IMO.

I made the dynamic brake blister conversion using Atlas parts #896295 (two of these) and #896248. This was your basic slice and dice, cutting up two to make one. I used these Atlas parts to maintain the integrity of the curved portion of the brake blister. I would think the same conversion could be done if you are using an Athearn as your base I cut the rear section off the first #896295 to get a flat space to attach the extended range door section. Then I cut the front section from #896248 (top part in the photo) to get the square portion that helped maintain the correct profile of the blister.

Remove the forward section from #896248 (top DB hood section in photo), and remove the rear section from #896295 (bottom DB hood section in photo). Cement the two sections you remove, sand and fit to the space between the end of the DB grid and the hood reinforcing strip. The completed conversion, showing the filling done to get the end result. Finished it off with the Cannon & Company extended range door (which required a little trimming to fit the space). Thanks for the proto photos, Mike, that would have helped me when I started this conversion. Nice to see one of the old 9500's I ran still in service!! Old Dad in 1976. Mark, looks like you've got an easier method, so please share with us!!

My GP38 extended range DB build starts the same way. I of course use the Athearn PAF box and front taper mated to the "backwards" Atlas #896248 piece. But I cut off the whole back taper of another Atlas GP38 DB housing all the way across to the other side taper. Cut on either end of the taper and sand down absolutely as much as possible on each end without cutting into the taper. It's really sharp this rear taper. Like the front taper on an SD38-2 DB housing.

Robert,
You going to do the bent radiator fan grills like in the WSOR photo above ;D. Just kidding.
This one is looking good as with all of your builds that you have posted.
A while back you were working on another IC oddball. Did you finish that one?
Does the AC have a different handrail spacing or are they the same as a standard 38? I recall someone mentioning this about the N&W AC's or was it Southern.

Brian, if I find a photo of the bent grille fan on an IC prototype, it will get bent on the model!!
My other IC/ICG oddballs in the works are the 3075 (EMD demo 433A), IC GEU30B, and IC 8800 GP7, SD 40A and GP10.
Others in various stages of development are NCStL passenger GP7and NCStL F units.
I have not found handrail spacing to be different on the AC vs the standard 38, but I try to stay flexible, just in case...... ;D

That photo of your dad is great!
I was 12 years old at that time and did not even know IC or OCG existed.

I just hope it ran better back then... Call it Wheezy these days.
I had the former 9501 (now WSOR 3804) today. It runs a bit better than the former 9516, but the dynamics don't work as well.
We also have the 9504 and 9509, but those are on the other division, so I don't get in those hardly at all.
The engineer front window is a bit lower in these. The top is the same as before with the L-window, so a regular piece of glass ends up a bit lower.
