How am I ever going to get started, when you guys keep putting more ideas in my head. Randy great work, I agree with Scott, I am dying to use the cannon parts for the long hood also, but I have to get started on my SD40, before I can finish it.

I don't know, maybe to keep it away from ice? I would think that snow and ice would gather there much quicker than on the nose, ala CNW. I'd guess that it was a convenient flat spot that they chose (which wasn't directly on the cab itself), but that's a guess. ---jps

Mebbe they just weren't as proud of 'em as C&NW and DT&I?

CNW's U30C's and GN's U33C's had bells in that location.

Ann Arbor had bells mounted on the nose and side of the nose. NKP had nose mounted bells on their newer units. In fact, NKP had one GP-35 that was a wreck replacement and the unit was a tack on order with the Ann Arbor GP-35s.....the bell was mounted on the engineer's side of the nose.

Hey Randy;
For some strange reason I got to this thread. It looks really great, but was there ever any more details to building this loco? Sure like to see them.
Just curious,
GT Dan

Great thread Randy, this is exactly the same build as I am planning to do at the moment. I'm going to make my SD39 a patched NW locomotive still in IT green. It would be great to see an update on your build.

Those gong bells sucked and were very hard to discern over the din of railroading, so they had to be mounted in a prominent location as to be heard. The DT&I ones would more often then not clunk more than clang. the corner of the subbase is probably the best spot to be heard by pedestrians near the tracks of an approaching train...aside from the pilot plate. If they were installed under the frame like most other 2nd gen EMDs, you wouldn't be able to hear it on the opposite side at all. The gongs were cheap to buy and service, that was the only reason for them...

Well, believe it or not, I'm almost done with this unit. Click on the Fotki link to see some pics of my progress. It's a real Cannon & Company advertisement.
