Welllllll... The GO A-units were rebuilt and known as APCU's (Auxiliary Power Control Unit) and were built from ex-ONR FP7's and 2 ex-MILW FP7's. The GO B-units were rebuilt and known as APU's (Auxiliary Power Unit) and were built from ex-BN/NP F7B's. The ONR B-units were rebuilt from ex-MILW F7/9B units, with the exception of one that they acquired back from GO later on. ONR rebuilt all of the above units, for GO & ONR. They also had more ex-MILW B-unit cores lying around that could have been rebuilt but were eventually scrapped. GO scrapped all of theirs with the exception of one APCU that went to Tri-Rail (and later a museum in Florida) and an APU that went back to ONR. Probably more than you wanted to know. I friend recently shared a shot of a nice A-B-A set of GO units when they were stored. Kind of misleading since they were all HEP generator cars!

Artur, I found your post when I was searching high and low for decals to finish my own APU: I started mine with an Athearn F7B for two reasons. I wanted to play with one, since I'd never done anything with an Athearn F before, and I wanted to go cheap and quick on this--so I guess it qualifies for this section For mine, I found good roof pics in the Second Diesel Spotter's Guide, so from what I could see the tall thingie is probably a snow-protected air intake and the exhaust was a second stack in the middle of the steam generator panel. Unfortunately, I only had fuzzy pics of the HEP/MU connections, so yours are waaay better than mine. Plus, I boogered up the etched grills by gluing them as a single piece and they love to warp in the dry winter here. After seeing yours, I think I'll replace the ladders with Intermountain parts and redo the yellow paint. You've inspired me to get going with this project again, especially if I make my own decals. I just hope this thing looks good enough next to the new Atlas GP40-2W when I get one!

Hey it looks good. I have the same problem with the etched grills they keep warping, the metal is just too flexible. what paint did you use for the green?

You made me dig all the way to the back corner of my paint to remember what I used, but it was Pactra Rally Green. If I remember right, I oversprayed the green VERY lightly with black to tone it down becaue the Pactra was just a little too intense next to the Athearn cars.
The top photo is just about what it looks like in reality.

Round 2 With the release of a Genesis GP40-2L, my old BB APU couldn't cut it. I've been collecting photos of the prototype for the last few years, and this time started with an Intermountain F7B. You can see some of the things on the new one that are more accurate than the original. I heard a nasty rumor that Artur plans to build a replacement for his APU, so is a build-off in our future?

It's looking real good so far. Let's do it I'm using a highliner F7B shell and a Genesis unpowered chassis. I don't suppose you would have some rooftop pictures of the prototype you could share?

Email sent. If anyone is interested in photos, contact me. I'm happy to share what I have, but I don't post photos that aren't mine.

Ready for primer. I hit it with primer, and the plugged portholes didn't pass muster, so I'll have to do some touch-up with the spot putty and reprime before painting.

Awesome job, I haven't started on mine yet. Is yours going to be powered?

Awesome job, I haven't started on mine yet. Is yours going to be powered? No...I never thought of doing that, but I don't think I need the horsepower. I'd actually planned to do top-and-tail with my GP40-2L and my (soon-to-be-improved) ex-Rock GP40, despite having a cab car for my 5-car train...or maybe just a double-headed train.

I will decal both APUs, and then the old one will wander off to a new home with my Atlas GP40-2L.

Decal artwork is nearly finished. Just gotta get it resized and laid out on the sheet, and I'll be able to print them at home.

I would be interested in a decal sheet when you have it ready.
