My next project is on the workbench, a SRY SD38-2, numbered 384. Here is a link to a prototype picture: www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=225318&nseq=27Base is a Kato model. Since i started with an dynamic brake equipped UP model, i had to change the roof hatch, which came out not that easy, since the non dynamic hatch is sold out at Kato. However, i used the roof hatch from an Athearn SD40-2, which fit with some modification. I removed the exhaust stack and closed the hole of it, i´m now waiting for the ordered new stacks. The other "cut work" that has to be done is at the headlight. The Kato model has a cab mounted, the prototype has a nose mounted light. Thats how the model looks so far. I have to wait for some parts before i can proceed (and have to finish the GP40 mother/GP30 slug project first)...

Got the Digitrax DH165K0 today and installed it. Since its a board decoder, installation is easy. I just had to relocate the front headlight, since the model has a nose headlight. I installed i small pc board on a piece of styrene just behind the nose light and soldered the led on it....

Huh, good question. Thats kind of detail i did not look on so far. Does Kato has the correct sideframes for the SD38-2?

Michael, I'd be willing to bet Randy would swap you something that would work for THOSE trucks of yours!

I asked the "owner" of the model about that and he said he can live with that. His decision...

Wow, that looks GREAT. I have an Athearn SD38 that I'm considering stripping and repainting as BCH 381, the lone SD38AC.

Michael, I'd be willing to bet Randy would swap you something that would work for THOSE trucks of yours! I'll just bide my time until some kind....benevolent....wonderful....company makes them. Most sideframes just snap off. I can't believe with all the 1:1 units on more than one railroad, both SD40-2 through 60 and SD38-2s have them. Somebody is asleep at the switch.

I also installed the ditchlights: Micha, looking good... ...how did you feed the ditchlights ? with little SMD LEDs ? can you remove the shell/sill without having wires connected between the shell and the drive ?

The ditchlights have pre-wired smd´s. I can lift the sill a few inches, otherwise i had to loose the cables at the decoder...

Excellent job Michael, that is a damn fine looking engine, are you going to weather it or is this one fresh from the paint shop?
