Hello, On Athearn and Proto 2000 q fans, the power conduit is represented by a thicker "rib" on the outside of the ring. There are two of these thick ribs. There is a "positive positioning" set up so the fans are orientated properly. The Athearn uses two pins that fit in holes in the roof and the Proto 2000 uses a gap on the underside of the ring that fits over a projection in the hole in the roof so you cannot install the fans incorrectly. I will label fan 1 as the fan closest to the exhaust followed by fan 2 and fan 3. The Athearn early SD50 and the SD60 have the ribs on fan 1 facing to the left, fan 2 and fan 3 have the ribs facing to the right. The Proto 2000 late SD50 and the SD60M have fan 1 ribs facing left, fan 2 and fan 3 ribs face right.
Is this correct? It is hard to find roof photos to check the fan placement. Ian

I don't know about the sd50 or sd60, and I haven't stockpiled any photos of those two particular locos, so I can't check. However, I do have some roof top photos of sd40-2's with Q fans, and they are arranged as you describe. Fan 1 has the conduit to the left, fans 2 and 3 are to the right. CP 6003 is one such example that I have seen. I also have roof photos of UP 9950 (ex-MP) in Barstow which show the same arrangement. I don't have permission to post those photos publicly, so you'll have to take my word for it. Here's a good shot from Trainiax. MMA 758. Hope that helps even if it's not exactly the same unit type. Jim Edit: Just found this sd60 photo on Trainiax. NREX 5951.

I have a number of SD 60 roof photos. They’re either CNW SOO or LS&I. I’ll post them here. 1drv.ms/u/s!AnQGfXsAb08egfU2xm_ 1drv.ms/u/s!AnQGfXsAb08egfZv4S2wfk_8iL6YqA 1drv.ms/u/s!AnQGfXsAb08egv5cREMm5iaFsvjTdg 1drv.ms/u/s!AnQGfXsAb08egr16Dj43x2aZtwyERg Sorry, I forgot CNW and SOO had winterization hatches. Hope they’re helpful. Mike
