Hi, Does anyone know the prototype basis for the RPP C44-9W? Trianiax has an ATSF diagram indicating it is a phase 1a or a 1c. He does not show the long narrow x panel on the right side of the long hood just to the left of the short equipment doors on either of these phases.
After checking rrpicutearchive, it appears to be a phase 1a or 1c except for one issue. In some of the ATSF photos these x panel hatches are obvious. ATSF 657, 660 and others have the long narrow x panel just to the left of the two short equipment doors on the engineer's side long hood. 632 does not have the long narrow x panel on the right side. However, most of the C44-9W's do have the long narrow x panel on the right side. So is this model a phase 1a or 1c, and one has to check individual locos for this x panel? Trianiax also does not show the sand filler hatch on the top of the long hood just behind the radiator assembly.
Regards, Ian

I came here seeing if there were any questions I could answer - and thanks to your post discovered several flaws in my drawings! The lack of the X-panel in my drawings of early-phase Dash 9 units is an error - from what I can see, it was present in units built prior to 1996, or prior to Phase 2a1. (Those phases probably don't mean anything to most people other than myself - I created them in the absence of finding any others).
To answer the question, I've looked for images of the RPP shell and didn't find many - but enough to suggest that it's not based on an ATSF prototype. It has 6 corner steps, whereas ATSF units had 5. It does represent an early-phase unit - and other than grabirons, there are no major carbody differences between units I've labelled Phase 1a through 1c. That leaves CNW, SP and UP units as possibilities.

Michael, Thanks for the reply. I will check out the CNW, SP and UP locos for details. Ian
