Anyone familiar with CSX locomotives know what the small amber light on the long hood is for? I can't say I've ever seen one lit. It's mounted on the side-top usually right before the radiators on an "L" bracket.

It is a malfunction light for the K9 APU or whatever brand they're using now. Only is lit when the APU fails, which was quite common with those things early on. The APU is a small diesel engine used to keep the main engine warm and batteries charged to save fuel when locomotive isn't being used.

Thanks. I suspected it was a fault light. I never had any units with APUs, our fleet were all smart starts or idled. The newer system would email and text you when there was a fault. Either that or the crew would be calling at 2am because the unit shutdown and drained all it's water.
