Next up on my to-do list is an SD40-2 High Hood. It will be CP 5485. On the prototype, these were used as trailing units only, and most of them had their windows covered up, as well as the horns and radios removed. A couple, like this one, did not receive that treatment, but they ran trailing only just the same. I have a feeling I won't be able to resist the temptation to put this one on the point every once in a while though. I started with an Athearn RTR unit that represented one of the stripped down ones.

After a quick strip, it's time to get to work! First up were some fuel tank details, which Athearn was nice enough to supply with the loco I also cut out the area below the exhaust hatch so that when I (eventually) put a decoder in this loco, I can hopefully put the speaker right below the stack.

Whew.. It's been a while, but I'm back! My camera was in for repairs so I couldn't post progress pics. Here's the progress: The long hood end with a Details West bell and a Cal Scale Nathan P5 horn installed. Here's the other end of the loco showing a speed recorder, Details West MU plugs, Cal Scale Firecracker antenna, lift rings, and another P5 horn. Here's a closer view of that beautiful Cal Scale horn. Anyone know how wide the grab irons are that go up both ends of the hood? Most of the ones that were on it originally didn't survive being removed from the shell. Whatever it was that they were glued in with did not want to let go.

Probably 18" drop-style grab irons.

The old BLMA grabs would be perfect. I am not sure if Atlas has released them yet or not as they own BLMA now...

One of my long-awaited parts orders came in, so the loco is coming along nicely! Cannon and Co. radiator screens and air lines added. Athearn open top fans I also added Details West headlights, but couldn't manage to take a good pic of the end of the loco to show here.

She's primed!! I just need a couple more orders of parts to show up, and then it'll be time for paint!

So once I again I realize I have finished a project without posting about it, and I aim to rectify that. Last time I posted, it was nearly done except for paint and decals. Before I did that though, I finished detailing the pilots, added grab irons to the hood ends, and added a couple more things on the roof. Unfortunately I didn't take any progress pics so here are some shots of the finished model showing the areas in question. First up a general view of the front and rear: Note the open style axle bearing on axle 6 (because yes, this is the rear). I simply cut the existing journal off and replaced it with a spare from one of my Bowser SD40-2 parts baggies. Axle 3 on this side also got one, while the conductors side of the unit retained all of it's original style bearings, matching prototype pictures I found. The pilot details were the same at both ends, consisting of a Details West snowplow and MU Hoses, Cal Scale Trainline hoses and cut levers, and topped off by Detail Associates drop steps. The MU stands are an unknown make, and came from my parts bin. The Southern RR had a unique style handrail, where the 2nd stanchion to the right of the step is attached to the MU stand, so to try and replicate that I drilled a hole in each MU stand and inserted the stanchion into it. The couplers are Kadee 118 AAR 'F' shelf couplers with the top shelf removed to match the real thing. If it was prototypical to do it, I would put those couplers on all my units, they are just sooooo cool looking. The cab roof and top of the short hood are relatively clean, sporting only a small Sinclair antenna (DW), a pair of Firecrackers, and a Nathan P5 horn. The end of the long hood is a little more cluttered, with the bell, another P5, and the roof access grab iron all vying for space. I also added the air line for the bell using a piece of Tichy phosphor-bronze wire (probably .010", although it may have been .0125", I can't remember) Finally, here she is in all her glory: The decals are all Microscale, while the yellow highlights on the steps, handrails, and cut levers were done with yellow paint, a toothpick and a steady hand. I hope you all enjoyed this build as much as I did!

Looks outstanding, and ready for just the lightest amount of weathering. I'd suggest thin oil washes and powders...nothing crazy, but enough to mute the underframe and pick out the details.

thanks guys!
Slowfrieght, at some point I will definitely be giving the underframe a light dusting of weathering, along with just a little bit on the hood.

I like your variation. When I did mine CP had converted 5482 to a B-unit and painted it Action Red. Again, nice job.

Don't forget to paint the wheel faces before weathering...makes a big difference.
