Started off with Walthers new Mainline SD60M. it comes without any grab irons or the like but all the hole locations are marked, making it a good starting point for a relatively easy project. Mine is CP 6259.

Walthers has a detailing kit available that came with grab irons for all marked locations on the model.

Here's the progress so far. Still need to install the snowplow, and I'm waiting for some more parts to finish the roof (lift rings, radio anntenna, etc.).

Oh gosh yes! Finally someone else who has seen the appeal of starting off with one of these Walthers SD60s! Good to know there's a detail kit already available for them, and that's already some great work this far! Hope to see more of this unit in the future. -Phillip

Got the snowplow in place, won't attach it permanently until I get the MU and trainline hoses on. I'm thinking of adding the airline between the brake cylinders on the trucks next since I'm out of detail parts for the moment, anyone got advice what wire size to use?

I'd suggest .010" or so to take paint thickness into account. Just be advised that if you add them to one unit, you'll forever notice when they're absent...

You're making great progress. I would recommend adding Details West 362 "Traction Motor Details for Locomotive HT-C Trucks" to fill in the open area on the inboard portion of the trucks nearest the fuel tank. The brake lines look good.

Detail Associates speed recorder. I followed their instructions and used a piece of insulation from the smallest wire I could find, but it looks a bit big to me. Might have to figure something else out.

I'll have to look and see if I can find something smaller.
