Well after months of research, trial and error I have FINALLY made a pilot that looks right. I still need to make the second one, but I am way to happy with the results of tonight to not post this.

Now that looks real slick.
Like the tube styling pilot used on this critter.

Really nice work on the 44 Tonner. Looking forward to seeing the next steps once you get post again.

And then there were two. I need to decide what I want to do for footboards. Two options: #1: (Left) Make them out of cut and folded brass sheet, affix with solder and add Archer surface detail decals after priming. #2 (Right) Make them out of textured brass sheet, glue styrene around the edges with CA- affix with JB weld. I'm leaning towards #1- #2 was the original plan. I'm back on my work rotation for another week in the morning so I'll have a few days to think about it. Any input or suggestions are welcome.

I've been very happy with the Archer surface decals when I've used them (only rivets so far), so that would be my vote.

Does Archer make the proper (diamond pattern?) tread plate decals? I think at this point it won't matter since you've done an awesome job and either method will look great.
Second question: are you using a resistance soldering rig? I've been thinking about buying one...along with a lathe...and milling machine...essentials, you know!

Second question: are you using a resistance soldering rig? I've been thinking about buying one...along with a lathe...and milling machine...essentials, you know! Thanks for the compliment! Archer unfortunately do not have diamond tread-plate decals- So I'd have to just use the GE U and -7 tread-plate decals I have on hand that I bought for the walkways... I think I could live with that there are lots of other good details so I don't think I'd sweat that one to much. The real reason I'm leaning towards scratch built folded brass sheet idea as opposed to the brass tread-plate and styrene idea is so I can solder the footboards on.. it'll be less accurate but way more durable. Here's a photo of the actual prototypes footboards that I took this summer while getting measurements. As for your second question, I do not own a resistance soldering iron though it's something I'd like to get my hands on someday. To be totally honest, this is my first real foray into scratch building brass parts- I am a total novice with a soldering iron.. I probably used one a couple times on freight car brake rigging before I attempted this. Essentially what I did was put the 5 tubes that are behind the footboards in all at once, used some folded over brass sheet to go between the tubes and the snow shield to keep them straight and then used reverse action tweezers to clamp the tubes down on that folded sheet (much like we do when installing grab irons, only with styrene). I then worked VERY quickly and regularly took breaks to let the part cool down.. the tweezers helped with the heat, acting as an unintentional heat sink. I then cut the tubes flush, filed and sanded the back of the shield to be flat again and regularly made sure that the tubes did not come loose as I worked, then I put another thin layer over the entire back to re-secure it all. With a resistance soldering iron this would have been way way way way less complicated and if I find myself doing more work like this in the future it's something I'll be adding to the bench for sure.

Committed to brass footboards! Super glad I did. I'll let the Tamiya Fine Surface primer dry for 24hrs and then JB Weld the pilots onto the locomotive.. paint won't be long now. I'm glad I didn't get to the painting phase sooner because my girlfriend surprised me with a Iwata Eclipse for Christmas, this will be a good first spray with it.

Pilots are on, surface decals are applied to all but the front footboards. Sanded the model down with 1000 grit sandpaper because I noticed some orange peel going on. Decals on the footboards and brass air hoses are all that remain. Wipers will go on last after paint and glass is added. Back on the work rotation for the next 4 days so I'll be hoping to get this painted on my 4 days off. Super happy with how the pilot turned out, it looks very close to the prototype.

I'm not gonna post a picture until the decals are on... but oh boy, I finally got this painted and gloss coated. Decals should be a go for tomorrow. The Eclipse sprays like a dream.

As promised, here's a photo: The windows are masked off because I wanted to keep the inside of the cab primer grey. Decals went on with minimal issue and have been gloss coated over. While I really want to keep soldiering on with this project, I know I should wait for the MU hoses first.. they should be here this week. Once they are painted and installed, I will lightly overspray the gold decals with the same black I sprayed the engine with (Vallejo Model Air Black 71.057- it's a very close match to Polyscale Steam Power Black). After that, I'll make a wash out of Vallejo Model Air Black Grey 71.055 (Basically Grimy Black) for the side steps, footboards and running boards. Beyond that it'll just be glass, (Kristal Klear), Wipers and installation of the fabric sunshades (masking tape) and wind shields. I am very happy with how this is coming together!
