Looks good, is the truck wheelbase the same on the SDP40 as it it on the SD40? I've been wanting to model an SDP40 for several years using a Kato SD40 and an Atlas SDP35 shell, but I was never certain on the truck spacing. -Trevor

The SDP40/SD45/SD40 all have basically the same truck spacing and frame lenght. I believe they is a one inch difference between the SD40 and SD45.
I started with an undec Kato SD40 and an Athearn SD45T-2 shell. I am also swapping out the trucks for the Athearn low mount trucks.
If you are doing a GN/BN version I have formatted an excel spreadsheet with all the parts required to do the build. Let me know if you are interested in it and I can sen it to you.

I recieved my railflyer parts and a bunch more stuff from Walthers. Now all I have to do is figure out how I am going to get the Railflyer fuel tank to work on the Kato Frame. My initial though is to cut down the giant block on the Kato frame. Unfortunalty all I have is a dremel tool and no budget for buying expensive machining equipment. I Figure I can cut the top of the tank open and slide it over the Kato block but not sure exactly how. This is a case of needing to measure twice and cutting once. I did get ahead of myself a little and added some of hte details to the pilot but nothing that is blocking any of the other detailing, just makes it hard to set the frame down anywhere! More pics coming soon!!

Hey Greg (or anyone else) I have a question I hope you can answer. In looking through the GN Color Pictorial, volume 2, by Joe Shine, the air horn placement on the 1st purchase of SD45s looks to be the same as on the SDP40s - between the fans. What are you going to use for the air horn stand? Overland had one but they've stopped producing them so I'm looking for a substitute. Thanks, Steve.

My first plan was to purchase the Details West Bracket then afix some flat brass to Provide the "legs" I have also been checking swap meets and been thinking about asking on HOYARDSALE and see if someone is willing to part with theirs. If I had some better pictures of the prototype I might just scratchbuild it out of flat brass. To bad Overland didn't try and sell off their line of detail parts. I need their winterization hatches, F unit fans, Diesel plows for GN and a bunch of their switchstands... If I can get any more information, or when I build my own I will make sure to post some good close-up pictures!

Man its been a long time since I have done any modeling... I have some more goodies on order but still have not got the last batch of upgrades on this unit added. I guess the good news is that work has been extremly busy and we had a great harvest! Maybe things will start to wind down here soon and I can focus more on model trains vs. real trains. Thank you all for you help with this project...maybe I can have it mostly done for MCPM?
