hey guys, I've been talking about doing this project for a while and I finally have an update on the N scale GO transit Hawker Siddeley build. I talked to a friend of mine who works in a 3D modeling program and we decided the easiest way to create a HS would be to model it and print it over at Shapeways. I was able to track down dimensions for the HS car that I found in a Government of Ontario Transit operator's manual. With some trial and error I think we have gotten a pretty good shape to our n scale HS. There really isn't much in the way of detail to grab onto the HS, its main a shape thing for the cars. We did a cab car and a coach. These are the cab and coaches that were NOT self propelled, I have yet to find enough detail on the fans to make one of the self propelled sets. The coach and cab will pop easily onto a KATO Amfleet car, just trim the ends with pliers to get the fit. I you want a cab car that runs I have also been able to fit body onto a KATO RDC car. I wired the KATO RDC with a Loksound select micro and LED so the headlight will work. Really I'm hoping the body just gets you started and people can go from there. I haven't done window glazing yet, I need to figure out how to tint the clear styrene a bit. One last thing, I had to have some custom decals made currently no one is offering specific HS decals, but I think some of the GO logos which you can find in N scale for the F40ph nose will work on the HS fine. Here are some pics:
More updates to come as I finish these prototypes off. The shells are already available for printing on Shapeways I think under Jono's toybox. Anyway enjoy and GO transit.

Look pretty nice!!!
Any chance you will also do the Canadian National cars? They went on to serve on the Rio Grande and Ontario Northland, and some of the DRGW cars went on to being reaquired by CN for use on the Algoma Central Canyon train.

I think the coaches are all convertible. Honestly there is not much to the design of the cars, they are very simple, the main changes seem to be wear and tear over the years but I would think any later version could be made off of the GO bodies since thats how they started. I would have to look up the cars you are talking about to be sure. I don't think we would modify the CG model that we did, my friend isn't really into scale modeling and he made these as a favor to me. Hopefully they will convert fairly universally. I will say that the Shapeways 3D print is a little tricky to deal with. Next time around I will probably try to sand the surface more for a smoother paint application. Sometimes it is hard to get an even coat of paint on the surface, especially metallic. Definitely use a primer on the 3D print before any more detailed painting, let the primer soak into the material and then sand it again and see if you can get the nicer smoother surface.

The link below will take you to a page with links to some of the CN cars, those acquired by Rio Grande. There are a number of differences, ranging from the vestibules to the window pattern but since you have the basic shape already making the mods might not be all that difficult. passcarphotos.info/Indices/DRGW2.htm

It says ex-VIA originally, are these also ex-GO I wonder? They seem to have replaced the entire doorway. I don't do the CG modeling, my friend does, I just provide the info. I can see if he is interested in doing the mod. Do you think many people would be interested in these? He will need to know to see if it is worth his while. I made a trade of sorts with him to get the GO ones done. let me ask, can't hurt. thanks

The Rio Grande cars were ex-VIA, ex-CN Tempo service cars. Built from the same core design in the same era, but not former GO cars.

Well I think I finally finished one of these. The windows are so large on the cab I had to glue two windshield wipers together to get the right look. Could have used a horsefly leg instead it was so small. Anyway I'm pretty pleased with this. I haven't figured out how to do the safety chains on the front door yet, but I'm ok without them for now. The chassis is a KATO RDC, I wired a Loksound Select Micro into it with a suggested sound file that was similar to the cab car. It has a working front light, and full Loksound, that decoder really improved everything, power movement everything, I can't recommend them enough. I also recently finished my fourth GO F40ph, it's in the background of the shots. I'm going to finish off the fleet of six they had in the coming weeks. I'll post on the F40 in another thread, I did a comparison between Scalecoat GO Green and the new GO Green by protopaint that I bought from George's Trains. I think it's made by Rapido. Anyway here are the Hawker images:
small note, the RDC chassis needs a little trimming to make the body fit. I had to add some styrene to create a platform for the couplers, and I also installed the styrene inside for the number boards. The windows are all clear styrene tinted with Tamiya clear smoke paint. The end pilots of the RDC work as the ends for the Hawker with some small modifications. The coach car fits on a KATO Amtrak Amfleet chassis. IT also needs trimmed a tiny bit for the body to fit. My friend who made the model in maya has it up on Shapeways if you want to try and build your own. The walls are pretty thin and like all shape ways models prone to bending but will straighten with a little clamping. I'm currently building some more coaches and a second dummy cab, I'll post pictures when I'm done with those.

Looks very nice in that livery.
Sad it's not available in HO scale on Shapeways. These cars has never been produced in HO to my knowledge.
It would be an interesting model project for Rapido...
