I have been working on this off and on for a while, the worst part was removing the *@#$%** cast on Dynamic Brake Housing and filling in the resulting hole in the roof without losing any of the other detail on the roof. I also filled in two of the three screened openings on the side as non-dynamic braked engines did not have them.
Now to add some lift rings, rain shields and other detail parts.

Nice job so far Rick. It's the season of bash at my desk too. Cuttin, slicin, scratching, and sanding factory plastics away for new stuff. Tools cluttered everywhere. It's the way of the diesel detailer.

Nice job. Since I come from Conn., many friends model New Haven. Someone did a U25B a year or so ago. Maybe you guys can put them together for a big Maybrook freight.

Spike, It was I that did the U25B about a year or two ago, that was my intent to run them together, much like the NH did. Got a little more work done, most of the lift rings are installed along with the rain shields, then other than the grabs and fuel tank modifications this puppy should be ready for painting, although some of the grabs will be installed until after the decaling due to interference problems. Wondering why you have retained the forward DB resister? Shouldn't it have been removed as well???

Jerry,
If what you are referring to is to the left in the picture than that is the exhaust stack for the prime mover. Why the rear carbody filter is still there is anybody's guess, the Wabash C-424's and C-425's are similar.

Hi Rick Nice to see someone working on an Alco. Nice work on the C-425. The exhaust on most Alco-MLWs with 244 or 251 engines, is towards the front of the raised panel just ahead of the radiator. The exception being LRC and HR-616 locomotives, though the HR's were later modified by CN. Cheers Steve NZ

On this N-Scale C-424, starting with the radiator and moving forwards: Radiator, water expansion tank (modification), engine air intake section roof panel. The engine air is drawn in through the grill on the hood side. The engine exhaust is the slightly raised rectangular piece near the front of this panel, usually covered with a mesh screen. Then we have the dynamic brake section, though they were removed by the railroad in this case, so the 4 DB intake screens are still on the sides above the hood doors. Ahead of this is the central air intake section with its associated roof hatch. Hope this helps. Cheers Steve NZ

Thanks to Sean, Steve and Jerry for making me look more and avoiding a major mistake before finishing this locomotive. I had assumed and you know what that means, is that was the exhaust stack, as I was thinking EMD when I removed the rest of it. Glad I posted some pictures and I appreciate the feedback so I got it right, will aid when I do my Wabash units. It is hard to find top views of locomotives to see all the details, especially placement of lift rings/eyes etc.

Just as info, New Haven tried to put the U Boats in the lead, according to New Haven Power, by Jack Swanberg. Apparently the Alcos didn't ride as well. I can't understand this, since they had the same trucks. Maybe it was the unit weight, or even that the Alcos look more top heavy. This might have made them pitch and roll more.

I remember the EL C424 and 425's did not ride a good as U25B.

I've heard the 1200 series GP9 called that. They were good riding, and pretty well advanced, when compared to the early Alcos. No 2 story ladder to get on as in the FM either.

Well, after the new information I removed the rest of the Dynamic Brake housing and finished up the lift rings. Need to add the details to the cab and pilots, then off to the paint shop! Rick J

Did you bend the shield by the air intake, or is it a commercial part?

Did you bend the shield by the air intake, or is it a commercial part? It is a commercial part by Cal-Scale, has a little line etched in the part so it folds properly and two mounting posts that I drilled holes for so it does not get broken off during handling similar to the A-Line Sun Shields. Here is the 99% finished product! Recent Atlas C-425 model. Removed the dynamic brake detail, filled the hole and sanded smooth saving the rest of the roof detail. As the New Haven had the smallest fuel tanks, removed the tank bulges and added a styrene plate over the remaining holes along with a Details West Fuel Filler. Added lift rings and the rain shields, then painted with Floquil Soconony Red and Scalecoat II Black paints then lettered with Microscale Decals and Accucals supplying the Red NH decal. I could not find my jewels for the class lights, will install those after I get some more MV lenses next week. Thanks for looking!

Beautiful Alco. There's a real live former NH C-425 still earning its keep on the LA&L. Cheers Steve NZ
